Chinobi
ok this is going to sound really blunt, but my list is www.google.com, and I remember them by repeatedly forgetting them and having to look them up again :) and then writing them down on a notepad or in reference books. what all metals are you melting? Frosty
Welcome aboard Watrick, gad to have you. If you'll put your general location in the header you'll be surprised to find out how many IFI folk live within visiting distance. Just Google the question. You really need to be more of a problem solver to be very successful as a blacksmith. Just whatever you do, follow Chinobi's advice, Google frequently, do NOT print it out! To be honest, I don't know many if any blacksmiths who care much about melting points let alone specific temperatures. It just isn't something we need to know, we're not casting. Sure you need to know temps, sometimes very specific temps for heat treating but that isn't anywhere close to melting temps. Frosty The Lucky. Frank Turley
I refer to my book, "Metal Techniques for Craftsmen" by Oppi Untracht. He has a pretty comprehensive list of melting temps. ThomasPowers
Yes in blacksmithing if you are melting it you are doing it wrong! We don't tend to use forges with pyrometers either so a list of temps to avoid won't do much good.
John McPherson
Ah, the BGBG method - by guess and by golly. If you carry a magnet and Tempilsticks you are labeled a blacksmith geek. (And why do the call it seat of the pants method? That's about the only part that has not caught on fire at least once.)
ThomasPowers
John; don't worry you still have time... And I know of at least two smiths who have melted steel in their forges accidentally, Patrick and Me! Knowing the temperature wouldn't have helped; seeing the colour of the forge (propane) and knowing it was 'too hot" did.
