TYB
Hey, My name's Jordan and I am 15, but hoping to get into black smithing at home, and possibly make some money selling small knives/tools at carboot sales and such. I have done some black smithing at school with my GCSE in engineering and loved every minute of it!
Frosty
Welcome aboard Jordan, glad to have you. If you'll put your general location in your header you'll discover how many folk your side of the pond live within visiting distance and we'll stop bugging you about it. John B
Hi Jordan, welcome to the site, we have site members and guild members near to you who may be persuaded to take you under their wing, or to give you some time possibly. Check out our UK Blacksmiths Guild section in the members groups at the bottom of the page and see if we can be of use, We do courses for 10 year olds to 90 year olds Next week its the Bath and West Show where they have a good blacksmith competition, live forging and display if you can get there, later in the year is the Dorset Show, again another good display of ironwork and competitions for further details check out www.blacksmithscompetition.co.uk for these and other shows on the National Blacksmith Champion Competition You will be amazed at what the competitors can achieve in such a small time eg pair of tongs 30 minutes, sign brackets in 2 hours shepherds crooks in 75 minutes and so on, some samples of infil made in 2 hours all done before you in the hearths at the show, an excellent opportunity to pick up tips, talk to participants and just revel in the blacksmiths craft. Have fun and enjoy your new hobby, we have young men like yourself who are just starting out and making enough money from what they make to pay for their college fees at Hereford. I believe he is also a member on this site, and he managed to achieve a fourth place in the artistic/sculptural class with a bird sculpture he had made, He finishes his one year college course at Hereford soon and can be very proud of his achievement, he should do well in the future. Curly
Hi Jordan, welcome to the site, huge amount of information on here to give you ideas and to get you started! I would also second what John said about checking out the Blacksmiths Guild and their courses. Kingston Maurward college also offer some blacksmith courses both full time I believe as well as evening classes. Im just up the road from you just north of Dorchester with my new workshop in Maiden Newton. Still very much a novice at this smithing lark but once I am more settled in and up and running your more than welcome to pop up and teach me a thing or two! :P Its not a very glamorous forge mainly consisting of a gas forge, the odd tool and an anvil. There are also indeed several other smiths in the area that I am sure you will come across over time. How are you doing with equipment? Lots of stuff appearing on ebay recently that can get you started. All the best, Tim
