ironman186
Hi Im building a set of interchangeable dies for the air hammer . And I wondered what is the best grade of bolt to mount them to the dovetails . Obviously the bolt needs to be built to absorb lots of shock .Also 5/8 or 3/4 dia ? Thanks for your help
macbruce
I use 5/8 for my small hammer and 3/4 for my larger one. I've never had any problem using just common bolts. There is shock but no shearing action, all they really do is keep em in place.

Frosty
I'm not clear about why you need such large bolts. Are they under stress from the hammer outside vibration? The dies we've been putting on our hammers are held in place with 3/8" bolts and I don't recall anyone breaking one, sometimes they may loosen up but that's about it. How are your dies attached? Ours lay on the male dovetail and are bolted down through a flange and not 1/2" thick either. You really have me wondering if we're doing it wrong. Thanks Frosty the Lucky.
