acxlll
Hi, I'm looking to purchase my first anvil. There is not much choice in my country, so this is the only thing I've found so far. It's about 70kg and supposedly made in 19th century. I'm really just looking to get into blacksmithing, so don't know exactly what to look for, any thoughts will be appreciated! Btw, it's being sold at 200$.
Wesley Chambers
beats XXXXXXXXX a rock, and if its the only thing you can find 200 is a deal, whats the weight about 150?
PaulKrzysz
$200 for 154lbs in great condition, JUMP on it before someone else does.
BM454
I would be very happy with that anvil. Would be even happier if I didn't have one. :)

Nick Esposito
I wish I had that kind of cash for an anvil. Enjoy you're new companion!
acxlll
So I went to pick it up yesterday. The good news is that the seller's estimate for 70kg was way off. I would say it's about 120kg - It was quite tough for 2 guys to handle. The bad news is that it's not in that good of a shape. The face is pretty thin, especially on working side, there also seem to be some slight cracks along the edge on the worn side. Anyway, I think if I flip it around (horn on the right side) there's a pretty decent flat/solid area to work with. Should I grind away the cracked section so it can't spread further, or just avoiding that area should be ok? When banging on it with the hammer, it seems like the crack extends about 2-4mm from the worn out spot.
ThomasPowers
Don't think griding will do much good. I'd use it until a better one shows up. It seems like an anvil in use will "call" other anvils to it. Many folks have reported the difficulty they had finding their first anvil and then tripping over others after they start using that first one.
