andys MQ
Hi all so just getting things started and have made a pair of tongs and a very dodgy punch for the rivet in the tongs. But not sure what to make next i think maybe a hot set for the hardy. And of course I will make more tongs. What do you use the most ? Only really interested in tool making at the moment. So, what do you reckon? What next?
Timothy Miller
Hot cut hardie, bending forks, spring fullers, rivet sets, punches, chisels, anvil bick the list goes on and on.
andys MQ
Yer bending forks sounds like a good idea as I use coil springs from a car for my tongs and such.
Ridgewayforge
Hardy is a good tool to have, very handy. Holdfast is another good one, could even be made from scrap rebar. An anvil helper is a good option, helps for punching holes. Veining chisel for making leaves, More tongs are always welcome in a shop, and many sized punches are always useful. Bending forks, as already mentioned are very easy to make for a vise, just use a piece of round stock bent into a U shape. Flux spoon if you are going to be fire welding anytime soon, fire tools, handled hot cut, slitters and drifts, small set hammers, riveting cross peins, hand fullers made from ball peen heads, flatters (if you weld), as well as all already mentioned. Make it, review it, make it better, and soon you'll have a shop full of tools, and a head full of knowledge!
GRiley904
You say very dodgy punch, maybe make another and polish that skill
andys MQ
Yes I will for sure:-) was just in a rush to make the tongs work. Might have to search for how to forge a taper, the one I did was just with my hammer and a bit rushed so is sort of all over the place
GRiley904
Look up Brian Brazeal on you tube. He is an experienced smith and has some great videos out there including one on how to forge tapers
Ridgewayforge
For tongs you can also drill the rivet hole. Taper square, octogon, round, square, octogon, round. (I usually skip the round until the end. It still works.) Also, use the horn to draw out metal faster.
