saskuatch83
Hello i am just new to blacksmithing and want to buy an anvil. I found one for pretty cheap but it is in rough shape. Looks to me like the face might be broken right off?? If thats the case can it even be used? I dont want to try re face it or anything as i dont have the proper tools etc. Thanks! neg
Depending on how cheap it was (if it was extremely cheap) I'd weld a flat piece of metal on top of it to act as an anvil face until I could find a better anvil. I've seen videos of people hammering on rocks so I guess anything is better than nothing. At least it's got a hardyhole and a in-tact looking horn. Ridgewayforge
What is the asking price? And, what do you have now? It is a pretty beat up anvil, but I would say if it is cheap enough it is better than nothing, and certainly better than a Cast Iron ASO. Looks to be a Vulcan, how heavy is it? saskuatch83
I don't know the weight, sounds like I can get it for $80. Have to drive an hour though.
saskuatch83
And I don't want to even say what I am using right now haha.
Ridgewayforge
Well, it looks to have some face left. I'd go for it if the weight was over 100lbs, try to talk him down a little. Talk about not haing pristine edges or something like that.
clinton
Is that a boat that they have it stored in? About the best use for it is an anchor. At that price and condition I would say pass. Keep looking
saskuatch83
I think it's on the back of his van.
SoCal Dave
Pass on it and wait for a better anvil. To much repair. Patience grasshopper.
ddwilson
Looks like someone has been pounding on cold metal for a long time. If you can get it for about half what he is asking and use it to hold hardy tools and small portions of the edge that is left until you find a better one. If you tell enough people what you are looking for a better one will probably show up, but it takes patience, I looked for about 6 months before a real nice Peter Wright landed in my garage. saskuatch83
Thanks all! I bought it, it's a lot better than what I have and it's pretty cheap price I figure. I can always buy a better one if I see one!
Ridgewayforge
Well, if you're happy with your purchase then that is all you need! Now don't forget to show us what you make WITH the anvil!
