DanielC
Being in attendance at yesterday's NCABANA meeting, I was able to purchase these punches and a few dies. These are from pill pressing machines for big Pharma (I think that's what I was told.). Boxes and boxes of these were up for sale, and by the looks of it, it was worth it! With an RC hardness of 60, I was told these were to be formed to fit different needs using a power hammer only! Either way, awesome nab! DanielC
I think I already have a use for the round one to the very right (Tongs/rivet hole anyone?). The larger oval ones may be useful for punching through a guard on a sword in the far away future? *shrugs* who knows, I couldn't pass it up. dablacksmith
you could make a holder that held the die and punch in alignment where you hit the punch ... kinda a poor mans whitney punch .. s7 is forgeable by hand but it isnt easy...its working temp range is fairly narrow but the good thing is its air hardening... metalmangeler
S7 needs to be tempered after air hardening at least for chisels as they end up being bittle enough that I have had them break. It has a fairly high tempering range, so you don't need to be super precise.
WayneCoeArtistBlacksmith
I have a bunch of those and forge them for all of my punches and chisels. I forge them and use them as forged. They hold up very well.
ThomasPowers
Funny when I first got some of those several years ago I was told they were S-1 Mine forged easily and I already had a set of tongs that hold the neck perfectly. I forged a slitter from one that I've used my screwpress to drive through 1" high carbon sq stock in *1* heat! I also use one of the round ones with a flat end for punching bottle caps for rasptle snake tails. I just use a chunk of end grain to punch into.
