Steve Marion Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 I just pick up and anvil and forge and need a burner for it but have no idea what kind. It is hand made metal box with brick inlayed. There is no top and it is about 12x24 inches. Any suggestions Quote
pkrankow Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 Pictures? Sounds like it uses solid fuel the way you describe it. Phil Quote
Steve Marion Posted June 27, 2012 Author Posted June 27, 2012 it is hard brick, attached is a pic Quote
pkrankow Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 Looks like it needs an insulated lid. Are there burner ports in the forge body already? If not then the burners can go in the lid. What are the dimensions of the cavity? A 3/4 inch atmospheric burner can heat up to about 350 cubic inches, and functions properly down to about half that space. There are a number of plans for burners from pipe here on IFI that are well described, or you can purchase one. Phil Quote
ThomasPowers Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 Note with the hard fire brick liner I would double the burner requirements---what are you planning to do with it? That's more of an industrial set up to do lots of major forging all day long. *NOT* a good set up for a hobby forge---it will cost you so much in propane that you could *give* it away and build another forge and still come out ahead! Steve Marion Posted June 27, 2012 Author Posted June 27, 2012 My plan is for hobby purposes so it sounds like I need to better understand the different forges and see if anyone wants to trade. Do you think I coonvert this one ? Quote
ThomasPowers Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 Of course you could line it with a more insulative material: kaowool or soft fire brick---but if you go to all that trouble you might as well just build one---it can be done with just a hacksaw and a hand drill and a file... Quote
Steve Marion Posted June 29, 2012 Author Posted June 29, 2012 Thanks guys I appreciate the guidance. Quote
