Loneforge
This began it's life as 23 layers of 15N20 and 1095. Restacked to 72 layers then twisted.
Loneforge
Not so good news on the progress, I broke the blade after HT......One good thing though.....I don't have to break a finished knife now to check grain size!
Rich Hale
Speed bumps are annoying in a long trip but wot you may see later is worth it!
gearhartironwerks
So, how'd you break it? What's the analysis? How was this done after the heat treat...on purpose? What was the heat treat? Just keeping your feet to the fire so to speak so we can all learn... Thanks for your effort. john
Loneforge
The blade had taken a slight twist....And yes I flexed it. I don't know what I was thinking. I took the blade to slightly higher than critical then quenched in water then ATF. 2 seconds in the water then completed the quench in ATF heated to around 120-130 Fahrenheit. Files skated right off....It was hard. The tempering oven was hot and I gave it a flex.....Never made it in the oven. Good news for me is that it broke at an angle to the pattern in the twist. This tells me I'm getting the welds right and the blades hard. Now If only I can keep from flexing the blade before temper.......And yes it was a dumb move....a mistake never made twice! Cheers Darren.......P.S. No John this was not on purpose! LOL
gearhartironwerks
Darren, I've made your mistake more than twice trying to do just a tiny, little tweek. I kept thinking "just a little more...I can fix that warp"... Oh, what the hell, I really wanted a shorter blade anyhow :) John
