Randy478 Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 Anybody got any ideas for christmas stocking hangers? Pictures would be great. I need to make 4 for my daughters fireplace mantel. Something decorative, but simple. All help is appreciated. Thanks, Randy Quote
pkrankow Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 Think of an S-hook, but put a long loop at the top that lays flat on the mantle and can have a weight, some type of decorative item like a pillar candle or small sculpture on the mantle. I made nails and drove them in permanent-like because I have a barn beam mantle. Phil Quote
dablacksmith Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 most of them dont seem to be safe to me... i would make one using a piece of strap that lays on top of mantle .. make it long and rivet hooks that hang over ... add weight to keep the whole thing from falling over if the stuff in the stockings get heavy...good luck Quote
Marksnagel Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 I am going to make mine to rest on the top of the mantle and hang over. Large candles will provide enough weight to hold it in place. I need a stocking that will hold plenty of coal! Quote
Steve McCarthy Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 There used to be a blueprint by John Bennett on exactly this. Maybe John could post a picture. Quote
Hayden H Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 If its a mantel that stick out you could make a rig that goes from one end to the other and catches onto the base and uses leverage to hold it on Quote
Anthony A Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 I made some with a tree at the top of the hook and textured the tree with a ball peen. Sorry, no pictures yet. Quote
Randy478 Posted November 19, 2011 Author Posted November 19, 2011 Thanks for the responses. J W Benett I like your design. I will give it a try and maybe add a twist to it. Thanksgiving weekend is 4 days for me and I will be workong at the forge alot. I will post pics of what I get made. Thanks, Randy. Quote
macbruce Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Bah! Humbug! Mean ol' coot.......Xmas begins right after Halloween, you should be full of holiday cheer by now! Quote
pkrankow Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Mean ol' coot.......Xmas begins right after Halloween, you should be full of holiday cheer by now! Really? All the stores here were dressed as Christmas for Halloween... Phil Quote
John McPherson Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 See, this is why I steal this stuff from the web archive these great ideas on my hard drive for posterity. I have lost count of the websites and forums that have disappeared, and some stuff does not even show up in the wayback machine, especially photos. Quote
Randy478 Posted November 20, 2011 Author Posted November 20, 2011 Thanks John those are cool too. I like the first set best, just don't know if my skill level is up enough to make the trees. Randy Quote
pkrankow Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 Trees *LOOK* easy, tapered, flattened, chiseled...Might have to try those myself. Phil Quote
