territorialmillworks Posted October 13, 2011 Posted October 13, 2011 I was frustrated when flap sanding small parts and started thinking about a better way when I spied one of my large welding magnets. I welded a bolt in the middle and than tapped a hole in the workbench. Worked great. That's when I remembered a large machinist magnet that I had laying around- strong enough to use with a grinder. pkrankow Posted October 13, 2011 Posted October 13, 2011 Very nice! I am fortunate enough to have a small magnetic mill base and it is heavy enough to not need fastened. Cleaning it afterwards is less than fun because even when "off" the magnet still holds filings on the surface. A bit of brown paper bag before use helps cleanup after use. Phil Quote
Glenn Posted October 13, 2011 Posted October 13, 2011 Place the magnet in a plastic bag before use. When your finished, remove the bag by turning it inside out, trapping the small pieces of metal in the bag. Tie off the end and pitch it out, or mix it with the next batch of flux.. Quote
jeremy k Posted October 13, 2011 Posted October 13, 2011 Glenn, I don't think the plastic bag would hold up to grinding sparks/heat, etc. I have made thin boxes from aluminum(thin aluminum) to shield the ground metal from sticking to the magnet itself but it still held what I needed to hold even with the layer of aluminum between them. Frosty Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 When I read the subject line I thought you were looking for a way to hold your bench down! You're right, a plastic bag isn't the best around hot sparks, aluminum foil works if you don't hit it with the sander/grinder, etc. Frosty the Lucky. Quote
Fosterob Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 Magnet in a bag is a good method for picking up grit and such from the floor or table. As Glenn said just turn bag inside out and do with them what you choose. Keeps the magnet clean as well, that is why I use that method. Rob Quote
