pike3e Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 I recently picked up a vise that was in a few peices. The vise is the type that uses a wedge or wedges to connect the u shaped steel that holds the spring and arm of the vise to the mounting bracket. So the question is is there one peice that does this function or is it two wedges with one put in either side and hammered untill everything is tight, or am I totally out in left field on this and it is something entirely differet. Thanks John Quote
pkrankow Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 There is a key and a wedge. The key has ears on it, and the wedge does not. The ears engage with the bracket. There may be other designs. I will post a picture of my vise...but may have to go take a picture. Posting pictures of what you have may help. I am laughing at myself because the only pic I have is when I pre-assembled the bracket and spring with the spring upside down! You can laugh too, my vise is assembled properly on its mounting, poorly shown in the bottom left of the picture of the coil spring. Phil Quote
pkrankow Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 Good pictures here, better than mine. Phil Quote
Frank Turley Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 The tech name is a gib (or gib key) which in current day manufacture, usually has one "ear." For the leg vise installation, there are the two ears, one on either end. Google gib key images. A good view of all the parts is shown on anvilfire.com using the pulldown menu and clicking on FAQS. Look up "Vise, Leg or Post." Quote
ThomasPowers Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 The correct answer is *Yes*. One or two wedges plus the eared key are typical. (as are the U bolt mounting used by Columbian vises and the *old* tanged mountings.) Quote
