Dodge Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 This project was designed to replace the original pedestal for a bird bath that belonged to my mother-in-law's mother. The original pedestal was broken during a move because it was frozen to the ground and an over zealous nephew insisted that he could free it. He did but it cracked in a bad way. Long story short; My wife announced "Scott can make a new one!!" I've never done a tree before and the original idea was to just do simple branches twisted together but it .... "evolved" the finish is, on the trunk, concrete "stucco" texture to "look" like bark, and branches textured with stick welder and 6011 dragged up and down. Final piece painted with acrylic to again "look" like Bark then coated with flat clear enamel. Thanks for looking, Scott Individual "trunks" started with 2.5" pipe, 1" pipe" and 1/2" round hot rolled drawn to tapers brainstorming the layout heating pipe to add 1" branches Main trunk was scraps of 11 gauge mild sheet cut and pieced in as needed roughed form before the finish application Finally finished and delivered on MIL's birthday. She cried (happy tears) when she saw it :) Quote

ironwolfforgeca Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 VERY Nice Tree Dodge a few years back we made 3 -12' high flowers stems for a project in Tapanga more or less like youre tree to help with the bark look the artis used Bondo & a fork -- LOL what ??? It actuly looked right & cool so thats another way to do bark texture :) Quote
Dodge Posted September 2, 2011 Author Posted September 2, 2011 Thanks for the kind words folks. I'm really happy with the results but more so to have the extra real estate back in my tiny shop! Steve; Bondo!! Interesting; making a note on that! Thanks. The stucco went over drywall mesh to hold it and it was cheap. I just hope it holds up to the weather like bondo would. Oh well, if I have to refinish, the stucco will probably be easier to remove and replace with bondo than the other way around LOL Thanks Scott Quote
