2ball_thepriest Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 Hey guys, I was planning to forge a sword and i was wondering about tempering it. I'm gonna use 5160 spring steel. Which is a leaf spring i got right now. I was wondering if there were anyways of tempering it besides an oven or torch? Quote
Nakedanvil - Grant Sarver Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 Before tempering it you'll need to quench it from 1600 degrees or so. How are you planning to do that? Quote
Steve Sells Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 1525 to 1550F is what I recommend, there is quite a bit written about this in this section, read up and if you have more questions, ask away Quote
2ball_thepriest Posted August 1, 2011 Author Posted August 1, 2011 I was planning to Heat it up to 1600 degrees in a longer coal forge and quench it in a tube a peanut oil. Quote
