dynomite Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 I'm very new to Black Smiting, so I am having trouble getting the metal I am using get hot enough to work with. I am using a brake drum forge if that helps. Quote
pkrankow Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Without knowing your fuel and the rest of your setup I would surmise that I can't help much. If you are using lump charcoal (NOT briquettes, those are mostly filler) or quality coal I would surmise that either your fire is not deep enough (try about 5-6 inches to start, adjust as needed) or your air blast is not adequate, either because your blower is not strong enough, the air grate does not pass enough air or it clinkered up and needed cleaned out. Marksnagel Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Welcome to IFI, If you can, post some pictures of your forge. A picture is worth a thousand words (give or take 673). Where are you located? A nearby blacksmith would be a great resource for you. Mark <º))>< Quote
Glenn Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Lessons in Blacksmithing = seeing colors At what color are you working the metal? Quote
Larry H Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 maybe you need more coal in the pot, and sometimes if you place the iron to close to the air blast the air blowing will prevent the heat transfer from the coal Quote
