Wayne Posted May 1, 2011 Posted May 1, 2011 Hi Everyone, I have had an enquirey about forging a batch of curtain poles and I was wondering what kind of finish/protection would be suitable? Thanks Wayne Quote
Larry H Posted May 1, 2011 Posted May 1, 2011 its inside so flat black is good, natural forge finish? coat with either semi gloss or gloss polyurethane Quote
son_of_bluegrass Posted May 1, 2011 Posted May 1, 2011 For stuff inside, not a lot of protection should be needed. Personally I don't like polyurethane, it starts looking mass produced. If it were me I'd do a hot wax or oil finish. ron Quote
Marksnagel Posted May 1, 2011 Posted May 1, 2011 Wayne, My 2.5 cents worth is to go with the hot wax and then rub them down while the wax is still soft. That way it doesn't look waxy and still has the protective coating. Mark<>< Quote
CurlyGeorge Posted May 1, 2011 Posted May 1, 2011 Hey Wayne. Thanks for posting this. My wife has been after me to make some curtain rods for our living room and I've been puzzling over this same question. I have some ideas, now :D Quote
ianinsa Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 Hi Wayne, At the risk of sounding 'comercial' I have found that powdercoating is the best long term finnish if you are selling the product. If you powdercoat both the rail and rings they 'slip' well, we found that wax tends to 'bind' over time, if it is for personal use then you just rewax , but once sold? FieryFurnace Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 I did some for our house a couple years ago. Just glossy clear coat! Ours have been fine! Quote
ThomasPowers Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 Stainless steel, no finish after clean up, still looks handforged. Quote
Don A Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 I did some for my wife a couple years ago. Used a wax/linseed/turpentine mixture, melted together and applied at a black heat. It has held up good and still looks nice. Quote
Wayne Posted May 3, 2011 Author Posted May 3, 2011 Thanks for the input folks, the poles are to go into an old house and they are all different. Looking at the options I am tempted to go with the laquer finish but I will run the options by the customer to see what they prefer. Wayne Quote
Wayne Posted May 14, 2011 Author Posted May 14, 2011 Well the customers have gotten back to me and have given the ok for the job. I will post some photos when done Quote
