Marksnagel
The rain finally left but that was because it was chased by a 20+ mph wind. The wind wicked the heat right outta whatever I worked on causing many heats which meant more coal used than normal. But all in all it was a really enjoyable day outside. Tomorrow after church maybe the winds will die down and I will get to have some more fun. I only got two things made today. A steak turner with a leaf handle. My first leaf that turned out good enough to share and a bulldog bottle opener. Both have bees wax coating. The horse head bottle opener I made the other day. Thanks for looking. The horse head idea was from a step by step post by Clinton. The Bulldog bottle opener idea was from youtube video by ArtistBlade1972 The steak turner with the leaf idea was from about a zillion of you here at IFI. Thanks for all the ideas and inspiration. I haven't had an origional thought since 1976. I think Mark<><

clinton
Wow you had to brave the elements- not easy to forge in the wind like that, my shop is out side I do have a roof but the wind makes for a smokey shop. Glad to see someone doing the bottle opener, keep at it I had to do dozens of them before I got one that I could sell. I start off with 20 inches of bar stock 1 x 1/4 inch seems to work best. I can get 4 bottle openers out of that piece with out using tongs (until I cut off) the last two I forge one and drift to 3/4 inch- quench it then forge one on the other end and drift to 3/4 inch, now I can cut the off and work over the horn. I end up with about 6 inches of bar left over that I can use for something else or weld them together and make more openers. I really avoid using tongs on these- too awkward
Marksnagel
Thanks for the comments! I try to go as far as I can without using the tongs too. Like you Clinton, I only used the tongs after cutoff because I don't want to mess up the pooch's face or the horses head while doing the opener part on the horn. Be nice if I had a nice soft padded set of tongs that wouldn't erupt in flames when introduced to hot or semi hot iron. Hmmmmm, flame proof soft(er) tongs, now theres a thought. Since asbestos is bad I'll have to find something else. Maybe replacable wood ends. Or not. Thanks again all for the comments.
