Alec.S Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 I have never posted any thing that i have made on here so i thought i would just add a couple of the things that I made yeasterday afternoon. two leaves, and a praying man the man is not finished yet, i have still got the polishing, filing and the stand for it because it doesn't pray upright alec sorry if the photo quality is too large... P.S i put a guitar pick as a size reference. Quote
beth Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 hey alec they are cool pieces - like the man - what you going to do with it? is it an ornament or something going on it? they are great :) Quote
Alec.S Posted June 1, 2010 Author Posted June 1, 2010 thanks....... the man is going to be put on a small steel block.....just a random ornament.. it was a piece of 1 inch x 1/4 inch bar stock cut with a hot chisel. alec :D Quote
Steeler Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Thanks for sharing some of your work. I would be tempted to leave the praying man piece almost as it is. To me it's quite provocative. Your leaves turned out nice. They remind me that I still havn't tried forging any kind of leaf yet. Quote
Alec.S Posted June 1, 2010 Author Posted June 1, 2010 too late...... I have already polished the man and welded him to a square block of steel......will post pics soon.... alec :D Quote
Alec.S Posted June 1, 2010 Author Posted June 1, 2010 here is another leave, a couple of hooks that had been made with my jig and the man..........the welds are not the nicest.....but isntthat what angle grinders are for alec Quote
Mainely,Bob Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 here is another leave, a couple of hooks that had been made with my jig and the man..........the welds are not the nicest.....but isntthat what angle grinders are for alec If welding small projects with precision is giving you the blues because all you have is an arc welder that doesn`t go low enough then you may want to try brazing for small projects like your man.Brazing can also be used to highlight areas too. Alec.S Posted June 2, 2010 Author Posted June 2, 2010 Thanks for the advise bob........I would braze it but i don't have access to any brazing equipment alec Quote
John B Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 Thanks for the advise bob........I would braze it but i don't have access to any brazing equipment alec What about using Carbon rods in your welder? Or braze it using the forge. Quote
Alec.S Posted June 2, 2010 Author Posted June 2, 2010 This was only the first one, and i will use other methods next time..... thank you for reminding me of copper fusion and brazing in the forge....... about the carbon rods....as they are carbon does it just provide a heat source from the arc so one could feed in a filler rod..... am i right? I have heared of "carbon arc gouging" which i know is a procces of removing metal...... alec :D Quote
Alec.S Posted June 2, 2010 Author Posted June 2, 2010 are you talking about this......? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Brazing-torch-arc-welder-/150448210288?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2307698170 alec :D Quote
Frosty Posted June 4, 2010 Posted June 4, 2010 Nice work Alec, especially the praying man. While nice, I don't think the leaves will be the hot sellers the praying man will be. I know I'm going to play with the idea, our church has the largest "Food Pantry" in the Valley and they sell some non-food things. While I haven't done it yet, I am going to make a few crosses and donate them to the cause which is where praying men will go. Sorry for the sidetrack but sometimes I just have to relate what something makes me think or see. Art is communication, good, bad, indifferent maybe but communication none the less. The praying man says the most to me as a statement. The leaves say good craft, well thought out and executed making them no less as pieces. Well done Alec. Frosty the Lucky. Quote
Frosty Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 Thank you frosty alec Heck, I just calls em as I sees em Alec. You're welcome buddy, you earned it. Frosty the Lucky. Quote
pkrankow Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 You could have welded the feet instead of the knees, or between the legs in the shins. Nice work. Phil Quote
Alec.S Posted June 7, 2010 Author Posted June 7, 2010 the feet were too small to weld....they would just melt away.... alec Quote
John B Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 the feet were too small to weld....they would just melt away.... alec Call it a feature and say they 'blend in', Quote
Alec.S Posted June 8, 2010 Author Posted June 8, 2010 another thing to try...... let me think........ i now have, copper fusion, forge brazing, arc brazing, oxy fuel, and feet!!!!!!!!!!!! keep em' coming alec :D Quote
John B Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 With regard to the praying man, you could drill and rivet throght the legs, or drill through base and countersink clearance holes, and drill and tap the holes in the knees and feet to fit screws to hold it on, cut off and dress any protruding bits off to give a smooth hidden finish. Or drill through base plate and blind weld the figure to the base. Quote
