LDW Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 I was at Brians Friday and he showed me how to make a feather. Here is a link to the pics http://picasaweb.google.com/brianbrazealblacksmith/LyleSFeathers# Karen was kind enough to create an album for me. She also added an album that shows the steps to making them http://picasaweb.google.com/brianbrazealblacksmith/BrianBrazealFeatherSteps# These are great items to make so far everyone that has seen them liked them. I cannot thank Brian enough for showing us how to do so many different things. The copper and silver both perform about the same in the forge. I am going to try some steel ones next. Quote
aquamanlr Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 LDW Them are Great. Tell Brian that his items are tops. LeeRoy aquamanlr Quote
aquamanlr Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 LDW Also tell Karen Thanks for making the albums. LeeRoy aquamanlr Quote
brianbrazealblacksmith Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Nothing to it, is there Lyle? You just have to heat it up, put it under the dies, and hit it; and then it does practically make itself. It has been a pleasure working with you all this time, Lyle. Quote
LDW Posted April 13, 2010 Author Posted April 13, 2010 Brian, you are right about it practically making itself after putting it under the dies. The advantage you have over us is knowing which dies to put it under. This is the valuable information that you are so willing to share. The heat, the hold, and the hit. Man, that sounds simple. brianbrazealblacksmith Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 It is very simple, but I never said it was easy. Quote

Frank Turley Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 Thanks for the links. Doug Wilson of Maine gifted me with one of his well made, iron feathers a few years ago, shown obverse and reverse. Quote
Bentiron1946 Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Those are so pretty they almost ought to go under jewelry! Quote
brianbrazealblacksmith Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Lyle,LDW, you should show some pics of the feathers you are doing these days. Quote
LDW Posted May 9, 2013 Author Posted May 9, 2013 I created a little album and put a few pics that have some feathers on them. The first picture is a guitar though. This is the newest craze I have gotten on. After making feathers for a while I realized if I bent the quill 90 degrees I could hammer in line with the feather. This way I was pulling the material towards the end of the feather rather than to the side. The original pics show one side larger than the other because of the direction the feather was turned while hammering. I also learned that when you chisel the lines, if you start on the bottom and have it closest to you. You can make each mark going away from you, this allows you to space the marks much more even. I will try and remember to take some pics of the process and post. https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos?tab=wq&gpsrc=gplp0&partnerid=gplp0#photos/106506050631612810521/albums/5875800729507362289 Quote
LDW Posted May 9, 2013 Author Posted May 9, 2013 Do you mind telling us what size material you stated with? The small feathers are 1/4" and 5/16" round. The larger ones are 3/8" Sorry about being a year late answering that question. Quote
Countryforge Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 Hey Lyle, great work as always, nice touch on the guitar . Maddy loves it. Quote
