cochran540
i have a large amount of black steel pipe which was pulled out of a basement from old boiler lines. i am wondering if this is any good for blacksmithing projects, i am guessing it is some form of mild steel? I also have a big pile of old lawnmower blades I saved from a junk pile. Just wondering if anyone knows specific types of steel usually used on these items and what types of projects, if any, they might work for. thanks
pkrankow
Old lawnmower blades are a med carbon steel, nothing special. New lawnmower blades can be quire exotic. See if there are part numbers on them and look them up and see. The cutting edge may be quite different in composition than the body of the blade. If in doubt spark test at several locations. Black Maple Forge
A simple spark test can tell you the carbon content of the steel. Also, be careful if it is painted black. Heavy metal poisoning is not fun.
