pkrankow
According to the website, http://www.thecrosbygroup.com/ the shackles are forged alloy steel, quenched and tempered, so it is a hardenable alloy. Probably take some experimentation but seems to be worth a try for free material. If the edge holding is not there, you still have good material for other uses. Nakedanvil - Grant Sarver
We always made shackles from 4140, as do many others that I'm aware of. Come to that, I've made lifting gear for Crosby (not shackles) and it was all spec'ed 4140. Forged alloy steel Q&T would fit that too. bigfootnampa
And I have made knives of 4140. Not the steel I'd choose for a carving knife or to filet fish but a pretty good choice for a fighting type knife like the Karambits that I made with it. I also intend to test it for scythe/billhook edges where strength and easy sharpenability are more important than long-lasting razor edges.
