Moosetrot
I was once taught there is a formula or ratio for figuring out what length a rivet should be so it can be properly peined. That was about 25 years ago... Now I finally have a need to use that info and for the life of me can't remember what the formula or ratio was. Being at the age where I can hide my own Easter eggs, I would appreciate any help on this one. Thanks! Moosetrot
bigfootnampa
I don't know what you were taught but I like to have about 1 1/2 times the rivet diameter extending beyond my join for making the rivet head. Just a bit more for small rivets and maybe a little less for large ones. It depends a bit on what kind of heads you want but upsetting much more material than this becomes difficult... especially in smaller diameters. ThomasPowers
What he said, 1.5 x Dia of rivet. Now you can fudge either way depending on how you plan to head the rivet, (flat, countersunk, connical, dome, etc) I picked up an old metalshop text bookfor a dollar once just for such info, handy to look things up in and easy to understand.
