brianbrazealblacksmith
Can anyone tell me what the desired temp(s) should be inside the forge? Also is there any Full Time 7 day a week Blacksmiths on here? I make Heavy Duty Work Clothing and would like to set up a couple of Blacksmiths with some free clothes to test for me. Let me know if you are interested. thanks...jesse Karen here... My husband Brian has been standing in front of his forge nearly every day for almost 30 years now. We are on a road trip that started in Ca last Sept. and are in MD tonight and headed back to MS on Monday. I could get an address there if you would like Brian to try your clothes. He is a traditional blacksmith and prefers a coal or coke fire and doesn't know much about gas forges but he knows how to heat up metal and move it. Thanks, let me know if you need a shipping address..
ironstein
Brian Brazeal would be a great person to test out your clothing. You'd be hard pressed to find a harder working blacksmith, and teacher! Welcome aboard.
Rio Bravo
Great pic of you and the Master Hofi! Good luck with the smithing! I have a poster from the movie Easy Rider hanging above my anvil...the shot with Nicholson in his football helmet two-up with Fonda on Captain America...I've never forged a motorcyle component but it just seems fitting to have that visual there... frankyluckman
Well, it says on the spec plate shwn in pic #1, 6-8 in h2O pres. The air pressure is also listed on the plate next to it. There is also a listing F1,000 I believe (recent traumatic brain injury from being attacked by a Great White . . . Birch might have caused me to writ the wrong number so take a look at the top right of the spec plate for the accurate info) Anyway, the air and gas pressure should be more than enough info for an experienced gas burner guy (check with a furnace or heating and mechanical company near you) to set it up and tune it for you. Frosty Thanks so much for this info! I haven't checked the line pressure yet. But it is getting more than hot enough.....

Sask Mark
frankyluckman, are you considering incorporating forged pieces into a future bike? I always thought it would be cool to see something like pattern welded brake and clutch levers. Nothing too gaudy, just some smaller detail pieces. Shakeypm
Howdy, I'm happy to see you got the gas burner fired up! is it what you'd hoped it would be? Did you get the coal burner squared away? I'd love to here the stories of the class with Hofi. Steve

Nakedanvil - Grant Sarver
Better watch out Jessie, this can be pretty addicting. You probably already have a little of the machinery lust. Might have to add on to the shop. Never seen a forge quite like that one, glad you got it going O.K.

Dillon Sculpture
You think that hammer is fun wait till you get a look at Grants little steam hammer on youtube- I used a similar hammer with a closed clapper dies to form stainless steel pegs for my pan. The tank shift is stainless as well but was forge by hand and on my 250 Murray mechanical hammer.
frankyluckman
Cool! Is that hammer run on Steam or Air??
Dillon Sculpture
It runs on air from a 400 cfm diesel air compressor. I found this hammer in SC on the side of the road. Old man came out of Mercers muffler shop and said "I'll sell you that for $200.00" I REALLY didn't know what I got myself into a total rebuild took six month off and on. frankyluckman
I want one, but I want to run it on Steam! I have a nice large boiler just waiting for it!
Dillon Sculpture
There are two just waiting for you I found on this forum. Steam??https://www.photoshop.com/index.html?user=Bentiron&galleryid=d5d728422f7d48d587bffffc2bcc8158&wf=share&trackingid=BTAGC
frankyluckman
I talked to that dude with those 2 hammers....He wants a little more that $200......
Dillon Sculpture
Well you do get two hammers (in case you break one?) and an air compressor. It took me over 300 hrs. on the rebuild, dropped $2000 on the compressor, etc. etc. seemed like a deal at the time.
frankyluckman
Cool when I find one I might have to pick your brain!...
Dillon Sculpture
No problem, If your serious about hammers thats about as bad there is, but in my opinion a mechanical hammer may suit the bill a little better. My 250 Murray is a hammer you can really use, forges anything from 1/4" to 3". Edited December 8, 2009 by mod07
frankyluckman
The Steam would be super cool! but a total novelty.....I'm all about just hitting a switch and getting stuff done! Let me know if you find any mechanical hammers for sale.....Thanks Man!
Dillon Sculpture
There are a few out there probably not hard to find in your area. Good luck, get it hot HIT IT HARD!
MLMartin
Mr Dillon has the largest hammers i have ever seen running. i know hes puts alot of work into having them up and running right, his 500lb mechanical beast is a pretty impressive machine in his shop. Mark Emig
Why not check out the new air hammers? Striker,Sahinler,Say Mak, and many more-no rebuild required-just plug in and go. I used a Sahinler when I demo'd at Peter's Valley Craft Center-I think 135 lb- nice hammer, awesome control hits really hard.
Dillon Sculpture
Ahh, mechanical vrs. air. I bought my Murray 7 years ago, done nothing to it but a put a couple gallons of oil on it. I also have one of those "air hammers" OK hammer but there is no substitute for power (Grant help me out here). You want power in an air hammer you have to step up in price big time or go to the older Nazel, Chamberburg self contained hammer that often need work as well. My point is that you get more hammer for the money when you go Mech.
