I've finally come across the need to share and learn more about swordsmithing. I am sincerely looking forward to having acces to a great deal of fellow interested folks around here ;-). I'm knowing about japanse sword appraisals, but still a learner when it comes to folding steel for katana. I have made a few tantos, but I have had no succes with differential heatreatment yet - I blame my choise of available modern high alloyed steels and lack of good claying ;-). My blades have never cracked, though.

However, customizing my own hammer has been the greatest learning experience. I like improving hammers, I quess.

Living in Denmark, it is perhaps no wonder that most Danish bladesmiths concern themselves with viking-culture and swords. In that regard it is quite exiting to realize, that even the vikings knew how to smelt tamhagane from ironsand, found on the Danish west coast.

till later...

Hi Unicorn.

I'm not planning to do a smelt myself right away. However I will join some viking folks in a month to see them do a smelt. The last time they did it, they crawled the bottom of the dunes to collect 25kg of ironsand - they managed to make about 8kg of reasonable steel adding charcoal. I'm still learning how to care and maintain a proper smelt. Are you smelting your steel yourself?
