Leadfoot
Hello IForgers Been hanging around knife forums and have been bitten by the knifemaker bug. Have lots to learn and am trying to decide one of the many ways to gear up. The way I see it, you can never have too much information. ThomasPowers
One of the best and fastest ways to learn is to find someone local to coach you. One of the best ways to do that is to edit your use info to put in your location---doesn't have to be *exact*; but a general location can help you meet up with folks in your area or to get good suggestions---like going to Quad-State Sept 25-27 if at all possible! Frosty
Welcome aboard Leadfoot Doug, glad to have you. This is a fine place to talk about making the sharp pointy objects so many love with a leavening of plain old hot iron beatings to keep things balanced. If you'll click "User CP" at the top of your page and edit your profile to show your location it can make a big difference. Frosty
Leadfoot
Thank you all for the welcome. I live in Eastern Oregon, lots of blue sky and nice scenery. Am currently liquidating the family collection of T and A Ford parts and cars. Have been buying, selling, repairing guns most of my adult life, but have always had an interest in building knives. And of course making my own damascus at some point. Have spent my life around old things, so have a couple of Peter Wrights, at least parts of two forges, but not sure if there's enough to build one from them. Thanks again for the welcome. Frosty
Cool, that puts you smack in obsidian country. After a friend of my Father showed me how to knap points I used to hunt the highway between Bend and Burns every time I was down. There and around Davis Cr. Cal. on 395. One of these days I'd like to make the knap in at Glass Buttes. Okay, back on topic. If you post pics of your forges I'm sure we can help evaluate them for you. On the other hand the forge is about the single easiest piece of necessary blacksmithing equipment to build there is. Frosty
