pkrankow
I used to give my apprentices a six inch long section of half inch stock and have them make a cube, then a ball. I might have to try this after I make tongs. I've tried upsetting 3/8 square stock, and have found it...upsetting...untill I remembered that I am doing this for "fun" Phil
Danz409
well. i tryed some more upsetting practice today. so far i thank im comeing along pritty good... still a bit rusty on the tactic but able to do it! in the 2 pics show a peace i worked on, it was once a railroad spike.. seems easy to upset that. just flatten the head side down and squire it off right? well. i did thisone backwords! i upseted the spike end and turned the head into a reguler size squre chunk so i basicly made the small end big. and the big end small! olcarguy
Danz409 Make your own charcoal if you can. it's very easy and if you can get the wood for free it is cheaper too. Some one has to building a new house somewhere in your neighbourhood, ask for the off cuts and be neat and you can get them all the time.....Try a search on making charcoal. matt87
im good now. i spent a 2 hour road trip and got 250 pounds. coal is som GREAT stuff.. gets it MUCH hotter and lasts MUCH longer I'm glad you like it. For the record, coal can only get slightly hotter than charcoal, and considering that's beyond welding heat anyway there is little benefit in that regard. Charcoal and mineral coal are essentially the same stuff (the same allotrope of carbon), it's just the coal is denser and has more impurities. A pound of charcoal will last as long as a pound of coal, but charcoal has a larger volume so it seems as if it's being used faster.
fat pete
i had to remake a tool for a guy and both ends needed to be upset to get more metal to make the shape needed....the wrap around side worked out well however the other end wasnt upset on the one i made and it has the wrong shape...upsetting that end will change the way the shape comes out ..... spud
