Reoryx
Hi, I just saw a recently posted gallery pic from Oakwoodforge about heat treating in a tube. I'm curious - is this a method specific to charcoal forges and what are the pros and cons to it. Thanks for any responses. Jason
oakwoodforge
Jason, This method works well with any fuel, Solid or gas. In a gas forge it helps eliminate the hot spots by the burners. In a solid fuel forge it also helps keep the temp even. I found that a even temp reduces the chances of a blade warping on me. I got the idea from Tai Goo, but it seems to be gaining popularity with lots of other blade smiths. ThomasPowers
It predates Tai as I remember seeing it at a Quad-State demo several years befor Tai said he started using it; but like most great ideas there are probably lots of people who have independently figured it out! One of the best things about using a pipe for heat treating is you can put some charcoal in it and create a reducing atmosphere and greatly reduce scaling during heat treat.
