I Forge Iron

Hello

Hey all. I'm a relatively new (and relatively young) bladesmith. I've made one knife so far, and I'm not posting it because it looks like dirt in my eyes now. :P Number Two is not far off.

The name's Kurt. I'm 19, Canadian, and I speak my mind, which Don Fogg and his buddies on his forum didn't quite like too much.

My hammer still leaves dings in the steel whenever I forge, so it would be entirely safe to call me a stock removal guy (I still forge rough blanks, and stock remove from there).

That's about it. How about you?

This the 32 oz ball peen hammer I'm using, stock as-is. It's longer than it looks. I have a 4lb, 1 foot long sledge that hits with about the same force, but the wavex is MUCH easier on my wrist. Enlarging the image you can see the face. It's beveled is all. How would you suggest reworking it?

While I'm at it...see attached photos
Don't laugh. It's pretty flawed, but at least I'm correcting its flaws in my second knife. The second one looks so much nicer, I've just got to shape the guard and handle, and sand/polish everything.

Oh, and somewhere in the final grinding I totally ruined the heat treatment too.

That type of hammer is designed for applying as much force as possible to as small an area as possible. A good forging hammer designed to avoid leaving marks would have the opposite characteristics as it would have a larger face, be slightly domed and have radiused edges.

I am afraid I would have to suggest getting a more appropriate hammer with a larger face and also preferably has a cross peen if you don't want to leave dings. :(
