grover
Hello, My name is Jeffrey I am 17 years of age from Nova Scotia, Canada and I am a smith in training. I work at a local musum as a summer job and last year our museum began setting up a traditonal black smith forge. It was a bit of a bad attempt kind of a "blind leading the blind". So i then went for a week of smith training at a traditonal farm in New Ross, Nova Scotia. Then tinkered around last summer. Our Museum then inlisted the help of a 40 year vetran BlackSmith with emmense amounts of knowledge of the trade over the winter who then designed and set up a forge for us.:)He then made us lots of tools and suggusted many items to purcashe from centar forge(goverenemnt funding is great). So for the past week i have been training witha vetran black smith and have been learning lots. Tomorrow is my last day of training i will be then taking over the forge for the summer and doing simple things like nails, fire pokers, wall hooks, chain links(made my first weld yesterday). And I am loving every minute of it. Just thougth i say hello and share my story with you. I may have lots of questions over the summer on how to do things becuase i have limited training but I am enjoying the trade, and a big hello to every one. grover
Frosty
Welcome aboard Jeffrey, glad to have you. Sounds like you're sitting pretty to me. I don't know how many folk out there have a position as a blacksmith paid by the gvt. even if it doesn't pay wages it really pays. What period does the smithy represent? Did it specialize? For instance there were smithies that did mostly mine work or railroad smithies, some were general shops that did a bit of everything usually in smaller towns. Then there were the job shops that turned out production runs of a few items. Others specialized in architecture or ornamental work. Once we have an idea of what the shop's product is and when it happened there are lots of folk who can suggest products and references to make your museum and you good educational experiences for the public. grover
Well the shop had not been used in roughly 50 -60 years and it opened in 1922. It was just a genral blacksmith forge as we live in the back country of the cape breton highlands. Where it was located the only industries around were farming and fishing. So if that gives any one any ideas that come to mind it would be greatly appericated if you could share. grover
