northyping Posted June 23, 2009 Posted June 23, 2009 Hi All, I am Northy Ping dropping in from the cloudy coast of Oregon. I have been a chef for the past 14 years, and I am intending to join the ranks of the metal-smithys. I have been apprenticing with a steel sculptor near my town. I am having a great time cutting, torching, welding, grinding and shaping metal. My dad is a very talented custom hot rod builder, so I guess pounding metal is in my blood, although I didn't realize it until recently. I have been absolutely captured by the beauty of metal and am very excited to learn more about this medium. I am relocating to the Sonoma Valley this fall and am trying to find a blacksmith apprenticeship or intensive education opportunity near there. I have contacted the Cali Black Smith Association inquiring about their education opportunities, but the return comments seem vague. Can anyone tell me if any opportunities to learn the blacksmith craft exist in the North Bay area? I'm willing to sweep someone's shop for some time and education at the forge. HELP! Frosty Posted June 23, 2009 Posted June 23, 2009 Welcome aboard Northy (or is it Ping?) glad to have ya. I don't know about apprentice programs, they're really rare in the US but the CBA has classes and listings for them by area. Of course we'll be happy to help. We like new folk, we can make up all kinds of interesting things to have you try. Heck, sometimes they even work! Frosty Quote
