scottv
i'm setting up a small garage forge and want to make an area for both a gas and coal forge. My idea is to put in a vented hood (with a blower) over the area and wheel in either forge when i use them . Does a hood over a coal forge take care of most of the smoke, etc. or am i better off planning on a side draft, etc. and making other plans for the gas forge? thanks
Charlotte
I have friends that have tried both and the majority prefer the sidedraft. Depending on how clever you are you could make the side draft hood a front poke out a litte more and the back a litte curved and free standing so that you could do both with one vent. The side draft works on heat it doesn't care what the fuel is. Edited May 20, 2009 by Charlotte spelling
Rob Browne
Side draft works best but if you can only set up a hood then that works, just not as well. Good luck :)

johnptc
my coke forge is similar but i built a firebrick house around it. open in the front and a vent on top at the back. with this style it vents very well with a conventional hood over the back opening. unkle spike
I have an overhead hood, and have used a couple of side drafts. Given the choice Side Draft it the way to go. There are plans on here for side drafts.
