Dave51B
Am I the only one here that now wants to drill a hole in the waist of my anvil ? Never thought I'd say that ! Dave
John McPherson
Google says the image came from an eastern European blacksmith site, but the Translate feature is only so helpful.

Daswulf
That is a beauty! I wouldn't mind having to get used to that vise there.
jlpservicesinc
Be handy when out doing demo's.. Can't say I'd want it in the regular shop other than for a conversation piece..
Hammerfall
just found the perfect base for my 200lb Trenton. I was at the scrapyard Monday and found this 100lb hollow stainless cylinder that I plan on filling with sand. The sweet thing was that I got the base basically for free, as I had a voucher for hauling in some old junk scrap a couple of months ago. I cut a top for it as the bottom is already sealed. The top is 1/4" stainless and once I fill it I will tack weld the top on and anchor the anvil. ronwend523
I just bought this 50# anvil from a guy that deals in scrap. There isn't any markings on it and it appears to be cast. I'm guessing it was a ferriers (spelling) anvil but it's been around a while and used. One foot is broken off on the other side but it's still very useable. I'm just curious if anyone recognizes what it is.
ThomasPowers
Does it ring? What does the ball bearing test results look like?
ronwend523
Hey Tom, I don't have a bearing but it has some ring. Not like hitting a RR track piece. I cleaned the top some and looking at the sparks it may very well be cast Iron.
Daswulf
Ron, you can use a smaller hammer to check the rebound.
JA625
My first anvil! Picked it up Friday, guy said it was passed down a few generations. No markings to be found but appears to be cast. Good rebound maybe 80-90% with a ball bearing. Just under 150# 3+3/4 by 17 with hardy just over 1" (1 1/8?) Let me know what yall think, thanks! . C-1ToolSteel
Trenton or Arm and Hammer. Very nice anvil!
ThomasPowers
The base may have been cast with the top forged. Are their any numbers on the front of the foot below the horn? If so what and on which side?
JA625
No sorry can't find anything anywhere. It's a mystery, not sure I'd have much luck asking the guy I got it from either but I could check if you like.
ThomasPowers
OK are there undulations on the underside of the heel?

JA625
How very "metal" of you JHCC And yes there does appear to be undulations Thomas.

Undulations are a sign that the pritchel and hardy holes were punched; another indication of a forged top section.
JA625
Thanks I was wondering what that meant. A little disappointing but maybe still a good find?
