ThomasPowers
I know of two wests out here in NM but both are over 700 pounds---I've never seen a "baby" one! (and one of them was *given* to a friend of mine, grr grr...)
greensngravy
Another great find - Hay-Budden from a horse farmer in northern IL - didn't need it and was asking $150 for it. It's very flat with pretty good corners. Marked 160, and made in 1894.
greensngravy
Hay Budden #2 in my household: Made in 1905 (?), weight 114 lbs. Very cool horn! Flat top with a few chips on one side, but real nice on the other.

I also wonder what the qualitative differences would be between the old West manufacturing technology and the modern Kohlswas.
Trip
https://picasaweb.google.com/112684238867987189105/PicasaUpLite#5730329083824205682 The anvil is a 115 Lb Mousehole, that a gentleman from Louisville Ky gave me!!!!! I used the same design as John C Campbell for the anvil stand, and that piece of steel next to the anvil is a homemade swage block, and it also hold the anvil in place. VaughnT
Gorgeous anvil, MO. And that stand looks like it will take a beating!! I've never understood what that shelf on the side is supposed to be for. Is is something for horseshoeing?
Private Entrance
Beautiful anvil. Beautiful stand.
ThomasPowers
Shelf is very handy for things like forks where you need thin access to an anvil face. They were one of the defining features to a "Coach Builder's Anvil" due to all the clips they used to have to make to interface with the wooden parts of the coach. FieryFurnace
I've shown this anvil on this thread before but I thought this was a worthy picture. My 280 pound Fisher anvil crowned with my 4.5 pound Brian Brazeal hammer that I forged with Brian a few weeks ago.
greensngravy
Question: I have a achance to get a mint condition Brooks 45 kg anvil for $300. Good deal??
Elemental Metal Creations
$3 a pound, not a great deal but I would pay it if I had the cash. Nice looking anvil. Where are you?
greensngravy
Waukesha, wi
VaughnT
That's a very good quality of anvil, and it's in mint condition. The question, though, is do you need it? Are you just starting out? Are you planning on doing any moving in the near future? Will you be doing demonstrations at fairs? At $3/lb, it's a reasonable purchase. Not a great price, but the quality of the anvil is as good as you can get and I'd be hard-pressed to pass it up.

danguite
Just purchased my first anvil. Didn't think I should create a whole new thread for it. It is a 120# Peter Wright which has a chip as you can see. I've been looking for awhile and finally found this for $250. Any thoughts on it? The guy I got it from was great and showed me all his metalworking tools and even some super rare tractor that he restored.
Timothy Miller
Here's the small anvil setup I put together today, and my new Champion forge: An anvil needs wheels like a fish needs a bike you don't want it to be easy to move.
Bigred1o1
tim some of us do need to be able to move them now and then my shop has to have everything moved to a wall if we have to bring a tractor in and split it so vices forges /table saw/ lathe /anvils /drill press/ welder/ chop saw/ band saw/ grinders welding tablex2 20ton press are all on wheels or movable with a hand truck its not perfect but when we build the shop we thought 30x30 would be big enough i sure wish i had had the cash to chip in to bump it to a 40x30 but thats the way it goes so long story short if you need mobility you have to sacrifice stability to some degree and i have yet to really be happy with a mobile anvil stand my 120lb fisher is on a 200lb stand and i still make it jump around but when stripped down it weighs about 220 or so and can be moved without much trouble on a side note with a little work you can have a anvil stand with the wheels just off the ground so that you can tip it to one side a roll it far better than having it rest of the wheels all the time
Everything Mac
Big red, Why not mount the wheels on one side of the anvil stand in such a way that they only make contact with the floor if you tilt the whole thing over. Bit of a hassle I admit but at least the anvil would be more stable. Cheers
