  1. Hello! I'm relatively new to blacksmithing and bladesmithing (I'm also a college student strapped for both time and cash, lol!), but I recently got about 20' of 3/4" mild steel square stock and wanted to start making my own tongs so I can get rid of the Harbor Freight mechanic's needlenose pliers I've been using (they're good, but I want better <shrug>). My question is, do I have good enough material to make decent tongs, or should I look for better material? Also, any suggestions or tips on methods for making the aforementioned tongs would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
  2. Hey, I grab a bearing cone from my works scrap bin, Im sure theres enough material there to make a small knife. I was just wondering about any tips about forging and heat treating it.
  3. Hello, I'm new to the group and have only been smithing for about 4 months but have used this forum for about a year for research and development in building my single burner ammo can forge. I have a question about steel type however; I just recently picked up a 6'x4"x1/2" tractor bucket cutter edge from our facility manager and I am wondering if anyone has any info on the types of steel used in these products. There are no stampings on the piece and I haven't had any luck with google.
  4. I have access to all the stainless I want on a bi weekly basis. among otherthing like the pins that hold the cars together at the knuckle. but my question is is about the stainless I have. I have been trying to research what type it is to see if it would be a good alternative to tooling, knives or other things. it is 1.5 in in dia and over five ft long. can anyone here tell me the type. I'm speculating it is some sort of structural type stainless. any info would be great. i have added a couple pics so you can see what i have.they do not have any numbers or nothing for identification. hope these pics help you to help me.. Thanks, Martin
  5. picked up a camshaft a while back and its stamped "A3" - anyone know if that means it's A3 steel? a couple of pics for reference ... thanks
