  1. I have nearly a yard of 136# rail and have been pondering how to make a stand for it. Since the shape is so irregular I was thinking about standing it in a garbage can and filling it with sand. I've looked through the improvised anvil thread and didn't see anyone else doing this. It seems like the easiest solution, but maybe there's a reason I haven't seen anyone else doing it. Any thoughts? Thanks, Pnut (Mike)
  2. Pretty self explanatory...borrowed heavily (entirely?) from... ...and here... Thanks Charles R. Stevens. Nothing is attached yet, bottom metal plate is 3/8", will be cut to fit. Top plate will be fitted but not cut. Maybe fill most of those spike holes, use one for a hardy, and maybe drill a pritchel hole above that diagonal cut out in the stand. Thanks in advance, MOe
  3. I'm a beginner blacksmith and I have made my own forge and anvil from scrap parts and thrift store purchases. The forge is awesome and I have no complaints about that investment but the anvil has some serious draw backs. I didn't know about this resource before I constructed it so I'm throwing this out to the forum to see if there is any advice on improving what I already have. I have read through many of the previous posts and all I hear is that rail anvils are worthless. I'm definitely a baller on a budget. This works and has many tool configurations that are extremely useful however it is noisy and has a depleted rebound. If there anything I can do to improve that? Here are a few pics... Let the beatings begin
  4. A while back I posted that I was looking for an anvil. I decided to take the offered advice and find a piece of rail to pound on until the right anvil came along. Turns out salvage rail can be had in virtually any quanity for $.25 pound in my neighborhood, (and coal is $40 a ton...but no anvils!) so I bought a 3 two foot sections. Unfortunatly I have few proper tools for metalworking, so I had to grind the crown and shape/cut it with a belt sander and angle grinder. I am planning to use the other two pieces vertically as a base for the rail. Any suggestions for improvements?
