  1. Hello, I built myself a venturi burner for a small heat treating forge and after many online readings, I was able to make a starter propane forge. I took a lot of precaution to make sure that there is no leak (gasline teflon + soapy water test multiple times) and everything seems good. However, since I am using a highly flammable gas, I want to learn as much of the process before firing the propane burner for a first heat treatment cycle for safety reasons. One subject that I haven't found about is how the burner should normally behave when I cut off the gas. So my question is: when I shut off the gas, what should happen to the flame? As I reduce the psi of the gas output or as I close the main valve on the propane tank, will the flame "burst out" (not sure what the term is)? Also if I reduce the psi to almost 0, what should happen to the flame? will it go back to my nozzle or should it fizz out before that? I hope that I gave enough details to get answers, but if not, let me know. Thanks.
  2. hello everyone , at first this is my first time posting here and i am from the netherlands so my english wont be perfect . i watched a video about making a propane burner for my selfmade foundry ( so i finished the build but it does not work like the one in the video here are some photos's and a video of my burner .: so as you can see the torch does not burn right and it burns inside the supply tube aswell.. i am out of ideas what it can be please help video-1477765585.mp4
  3. I've had a hard time finding Frosty's design on here and online in general, but I did find it after about an hour. Bellow is the link to the website. Just trying to share it on here, as I'm sure it has been many times, and make it easy to find. I apologize if this is obnoxiously redundant... Probably should've posted it in the gas forge forum... Frosty is an active member here, and if you had looked in the gas forge section you would have had better luck locating it than in the building a shop section, I will move this where it belongs. and remove the off site link. since its pinned at the top if the pages in the correct section already.

    Forge burner body

Propane forge burner. Based on Ron Reil design. Modified design to use a 1" x 1 1/2" reducer as the discharge opening rather than a shaped flare. Works very well with a #57 orifice at 5200 ft elev.

  5. Hey guys, I built two burners this week after work. Both are 3/4". One is a Ron Reil style with the mig tip mod. The other is my interpertation of a hybrid style ...except not as nice ...or as good functioning but I did it anyways lol....What i would like to get is some opinion on flames of each burner. I know what i think but i am curious to learn what others see. My goal here is education for myself and being able to build the best burner that i can. I am also open to any suggestions or critiques. I do not have any psi info on the flames in question because i have them each running on a small 1 lb propane cylinder.Though i will be making a tractor supply store run this week. Also you may note thay the hybrid type does not have a choke sleeve on at this pic but it does have one...Thank you in advance for any and all input. P.s excuse the mess ..the maid is on strike, something about labor laws and my mom? Not sure couldnt hear her over the drill press
  6. Hello, I built an propane burner today, and fired it up. I used a 3/4 pipe, drilled a couple of 10 mm air holes, a 0.8 mm MIG tip and forged a flair with a unscientific angle (thought it looked good). This is the first test where I change the pressure and limit the amount of air with my hand. What do you think? It seems to me like it is not burning with the best fuel/air ratio. Seems to need more air, but I do not know. /E
