Hey folks, I was gifted a g2-style guillotine tool last weekend. The catch? It's never been assembled and I've never been in the same room as one of this design. The attached photo is every piece I received. Anybody out there have some diagrams of this going together? Thanks in advance. Bill

I'm looking for suggestions for types of steel to make a fuller top and bottom die for a guillotine tool.

So I just got my shiny new ABANA membership for christmas and I'm looking to buy a few new toys to get my workshop a bit more efficient. I'm a decent welder, and have taken a few smithing classes so I know enough to know that good tools are very important to making a good finished product. I've got a nice little two burner gas forge, a great old mousehole anvil, a solid post vice, couple hammers, and a couple pairs of tongs. All the basics, plus a more than decent welding set up. As I shop around I notice that actual new blacksmithing tools are crazy expensive, which brings me to my question.

Have a buddy in the smithy for 2 weeks and he is new to "smithing" so we have been tooling, he has limited stuff so I want to send him, home with 20-30 smithing tools and the ability and knowledge to make tools when he returns home. He wanted a guillotine hardy tool. I did not have one I always made spring fullers for all my needs or top and bottom tools. But we looked at several different ones came up with a simple design. Then we thought hey why not make a half dozen of them to sell cheaply to guys in the club. So off to the scrapyard we went-long trip, its about 200' from the front door

So having just recently aquired a decent sized anvil, I need to tool up, I have never had an anvil large enough to really support one of these, so this was the first tool a made. I saw Bill Epps use one of these in his video and I really liked the concept! I know it is not a forged tool, but it is a tool none the less!

Made my first guillotine today found some 5/8 flange about 5 in wide cut 3- 3x4 in pieces out of it and 2- 1x4in pieces. Ground the 2 1x4s with a slight taper on one side then deep welded it up and did the same with the 3x4s and the last 3x4 i welded some 1x1 angle iron about 4 in long on it and did a lot of grinding to make it the die i wanted. One problem that i hadnt thought of was its made of mild steel though as long as i hit hot metal it shouldnt be a problem to me. will be finding out exactly what size square tubing i need for my hardie hole. any way thanks for looki
