  1. I am currently working on building a new propane forge. I plan to use two inched of 2600 degree kaolwool, soft firebrick, and coating everything in ITC. The forge will be 12 inches long and use 1 frosty T burner. My plan is to build it an and 8 inch diameter pipe. That would leave me a 4 inch chamber which is plenty big for the knife work that I do, and I have a coal forge for oddly shaped work. My question is, are there any downsides to a small forge other than what you can fit in it? I don't want to use any more gas than I have to so my whole goal is efficiency. In other words, why wou
  2. I've seen a lot of newer folks wanting to get started blacksmithing and have a tiny budget so I thought I'd put some links I found helpful in place. Here's the links for the forges. Option 2. Option 3. .For a cheap anvil. For some tongs until you have the skills to forge proper tongs. . And the techniques you'll need to make something. . I hope this helps some newcomers be able to find what they need in one post. Good luck,be safe, and remember it's supposed to be fun. Pnut
  3. Hello everyone out there. I have been looking around this site on and off for a while now. I am relatively new to forging and trying to get a forge up and going. I tried a coffee can forge with a Walmart special propane torch. It does not get hot enough to even get the metal workable. So I have decided to make a coal forge out of a old propane grill. I have been seeing a lot about JABOD forges and I am thinking that is the way I wan to go. What should I know about making one. And any other suggestions or tips I should know. Any help is greatly appreciative. I am mainly looking to make knive
  4. Hey everyone my name is Dallas. I am from Southeast Texas and no I am not named after the Cowboys. Yesterday I built my first forge out of an old grill a roommate said I could have and some bricks from Home Depot. I have been wanting do do this craft for several years and didn’t know how or where to start. So I thought the best way to learn is to fail so don’t hold back when correcting me. Thank you for your time and I look forward to any input so that I can forge properly and safely. Thanks Dallas
  5. I am currently building forges to increase the opportunities for members to have forge time, and so that we can offer classes. At the moment I am working on two forges and fire pots. To make the template for the fire pots I took a five inch wide piece of steel and drew a line perpendicular to the edges. I then measured 2.5" each way from the top of that line and 5" each way from the bottom of the line. I then connected those point and cut out the template. Because all four sides of the fire pot are the same, I could then cut all the sides by simply flipping the steel on the saw for ea
  6. Hi Guys Finally got around to finishing up my new gas forge. More of a Blue flame coming from the mouth of the forge. Does this look right??
  7. I need prices on anvils, tongs, hammers, and forges. And I don't mean the cheap prices just the ones to get started. btw I live in alaska Mod Note: post edited
  8. Hey everyone, I am looking to get into blacksmithing, and I was curious if anyone had some advice on forges? I have watched a couple youtube videos, and I think im going to try building my own propane forge. Does anyone have any pointers, or insight on this? Any tips at all would be greatly appreciated, and not just tips on forges but anything to do with blacksmithing. Cheers,
  9. Ladies and gents - I am building a gas forge this winter. Planning to use Michael Porter's basic propane cylinder design. Because it is already piped to my property, I would like to use natural gas. This would eliminate the need for bottles, and for keeping them changed. Is it possible to use natural gas instead of propane with a simple, naturally aspirated forge? Are there any cons to doing so? Do you know of any guides or FAQs about doing so? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
  10. Hello all I am very interested in getting into bladesmithing and even posted a discussion awhile back about information on constructing a side draft forge but I have had an unfortunate lack of funds to do so. My current situationhas made me rethink my starter forge design. Since I still need to learn the hammering and heating techniques as well as heat treating I was looking for some info on brake drum forges and the pros and cons of using them as far as functionality I am mainly going to start out making knives. Any information and help would be appreciated. I know I intend to use a solid fue
  11. Hello , I'm new to all this and ran across this and was wondering if this would work for a start to building a Forge ?? I can get it cheap and its pretty heavy duty the size is 40"W X 20" D X 51" T the opening is 33" X 29" and the chimney opening is 8" X 12"... thanks for any comments .. JT
  12. I have a coke forge in my shop and I am trying to find the best way to vent it and where to buy supplies here in Texas.
  13. I know this is probably an over-posted topic, but I've been looking for an answer for quite a while and I haven't found it. I've seen several pros and cons lists about coal vs. gas stoves. I've seen a lot of the same information, but also a lot of conflicting information. I'm looking to build a mid-size forge to be my first forge. I am a complete novice at blacksmithy. That being said, I've seen some people who say that coal stoves are the way to go for beginners. According to some, because of the versatility and better heat available with a coal forge, that is where all beginners should start
  14. I built a forge that I had intended to do some brass smelting with. I finished it two weeks ago and last night I smelted my first chunk of brass. After I was done I noticed four cracks on the outside of the forge (this a brick forge with 4 inch thick fire bricks as the walls and floor of the forge) and the center seam line of the ceiling bricks is cracked. Is this because of the heat of the fire needed to melt brass, or is it something else? The bricks that formed the ceiling suffered no damage other than the cracked mortar it was the exterior walls that cracked. Those wall are about 8 in

  16. Hi, Does anyone know where I could find some good bituminous coal in Australia? As of now, i am using BBQ briquettes that don't coke, have heaps of ash, and are basically not clean. Would anyone know where i could find some?
