  1. Hi im new here and wanted to get some information like: How would i go about learning after joining OABA. Where can i learn, is it in the city of Toronto. how do i even get started. ive always wanted to learn to Blacksmith.. and id like to start as soon as possible.
  2. Hey Guys. The Edmonton Blacksmith Shop is looking at selling their forge burners separately. They have put them up on their website to gauge interest to see if they will choose to make them available for purchase. I bought their forge and though I haven't used it much (and know even less about forging) it seems quite capable. It would be nice to have a Canadian option for forge burners for those of us north of the border who would like to make their own forge but don't wish to fiddle with burners. I would encourage anyone interested to check them out so they might make them available.
  3. Hi all! Just wanted to introduce myself and say hi. I'm new to the forum, and new to blacksmithing; as a matter of fact I don't even have a forge yet. I'm working on that though, and am in the process of designing/building a propane forge. Anyone else in the Edmonton area that could help me source steels, tools, etc. locally? Thanks, and I look forward to learning a lot here... John
  4. Well, hello to everyone- Names Corey, and I hope to start blacksmithing soon- this site has been invaluable in constructing my brake drum forge and my (soon-to-be) bellows, so I decided I might as well sign up and at least introduce myself. I'm from the Lower Mainland in British Columbia, Canada, and if anyone knows any good places out here to get resources, or wouldn't mind helping me learn the basic, id love to know- right now I've read through The Complete Modern Blacksmith by Weygers, I managed to locate a small anvil from an auto repair shop, a cross pein hammer I bought new from Rona.
  5. Hello, I am renting a space in Toronto (North York) and my landlord requires me to have insurance. I am having a hard time finding a company willing to insure me on the account of the "Open Fire" of the propane forge. So I would like to know from you guys in Canada, What insurance company are you using?
  6. New From Canada! Hey, I'm a new (Canadian!) blacksmith. My first project (which I'm working on now) is cold-forging a 3'' iron nail into a small knife. I'm making one for my mother's birthday, which is in August. She doesn't like weapons, so I'm cold-forging a nail into a "letter opener" so she can open her birthday card with it ;) . Anyway, I have a few new person question :P Here they are: -What kind of material/metal should I make my pouring shank out of? -Is it okay to use cheap Dollar Store clay for molds (will be pouring molten metal into it), or should I look into specialty stores
  7. i am looking for a place to buy knife blades like these http://www.knifemaking.com/category-s/57.htm so i can finish them and better understand how to mount hardwear top them without spending a ton of money making the blades, then i can hopefully sell them (being honest that the blades are not of my making) for a small profit, but i cant find any where i can order them through the mail in canada, i could order them from jantz but would rather not pay the boarder fees and wait for the super efficient boarder people to let the package through Thanks Josh
