  1. Hi people, im looking at buying my first anvil and have failed to find a decent ASO and frankly can't afford much more than this 1 is listed at. The seller says its early 1800s pre-peter wright method forged anvil and im tempted in my ignorance to agree given the waist's slight off centre nature. It has a bit of sway but the damage doesnt seem to have become so bad as to make it unuseable to me. my question i suppose is does anybody have knowledge of anvils this old/construction method, do they still have a hardened steel surface and at £250 does this seem like a good 1?
  2. I just won this Saw Makers Anvil at auction.. its much larger in person then the photos indicate .. the photos aren't very good and I don't have it in my possession yet, probable won't until Saturday to look it over better.. Its quite tall not sure of the exact height or weight and measures 17" X13' so its pretty heavy.. I don't see any online that really look exactly it.. from the photos does anyone have any ideas of the maker ?? I will show more photos of it once I get it home.. thanks, JT
  3. Can anyone explain the difference between wrought specification like H13 tool steel and cast specification like maybe ductile cast iron? It's a frustrating topic for Holland Anvils.
  4. I wanted to try my hand at blacksmithing and I dug this up from my grandparents old house before it gets sold, I know nothing about it could someone please help me out a little. It's been in the family for several generat I on but hasn't been used in a very long time. I don't even know how to clean it. And info on this anvil or any tips to cleaning would be great, thanks... Russ
  5. New Member. Thought I'd kill two birds, say hello and give some info on the anvil I ended up with so it's available to anyone who might find it useful. Really appreciate the wealth of knowledge on the site! I haven't had a question yet that I couldn't find a relevant discussion about and being "Rigidizer drying as I type" green there's been a lot. Looking forward to progressing and hopefully being able to contribute. I have every intention of using this little guy as is to it's fullest and would appreciate any input especially in regards to the repairs, (I wouldn't hit that with anything harder than your purse, etc). I don't have any history on the anvil itself. The gentleman I bought it off had a shed full of anvils and chuckled when I asked if he did any blacksmithing himself. Just buys and sells... . Sorry If the picture quality isn't great. I assume it once had a pritchel hole and suffered a pretty substantial failure there and was filled in with the weld? Marked "Fisher" on the front of the base. With a proud "9" above it. on the opposite side "1887" with "3 11" under it. Possibly some well worn markings below that I can't make out. Weighs in at 85 lbs. Stands 9 5/8" tall, 17 3/8" horn to heel, face is 3 1/4"x 11". Foot profile is 9 x 8 1/2 and a 3/4" hardie hole pretty well rounded, might have started 5/8"?. Rebound is at about 75% with the rust still on(1" ball bearing). No ring to speak of as I've read is normal for Fishers, "city anvil". The welds are not as hard as the face which I hope Is a good thing meaning the temper wasn't messed with? Hopefully I uploaded the pictures right. Thanks for looking. Alex
  6. Hi! I found a 202 kg soderfors which I got a bit excited for and payed a bit too much probably. Then I went online to see how you guys are evaluating tools. It looks like here in Europe tool trends follow the US market (in brands, patterns, condition etc ). My question is. How do you get to say : mint, dead mint, good, fine, fine + ? Is it a repaired anvil the worst thing possible?
  7. I just picked up this Anvil today from the shipping Co. I bought it off eBay after it had been listed a couple times as pick up only . the seller said he had it sold once but returned the money after finding shipping was to expensive through UPS.. ( I use a much cheaper freight co.) the seller relisted it at a lower price and added a " make offer " option.. I made a overly low offer to accommodate the shipping cost expecting a refusal or counter offer and walked away and didn't look again until the next day.. I was very surprised he excepted the offer !! the seller was a older gentleman of 80 yrs and was selling it for a old friends wife after his friend had passed.. it was in his friends auto body shop when he bought the shop and remained there the next 40 years that he ran the shop before he died.. it was covered with gray primer overspray which was about 1/8" thick in places and a couple globs of solder on the horn.. the globs came right off with the presser of a thumb nail.. I wire brushed it to get the overspray off and reviled all the great forging marks !! it has a great ring and exceptional rebound !! I will wire wheel it with a angle grinder tomorrow for better results..
  8. I'm brand-spanking-new and know just about nothing about anvils. Any advice on this one? Seller says it's 200 pounds. I notice that it has raised lettering, which seems less than ideal. Thanks!
  9. was anyone at this auction yesterday and see this one in person ?? it was listed as a 930 lb. RIS Miller Anvil 1 of 3 made.. sold for $7250.00 + fees and possibly tax's. there were many many anvils auctioned off there yesterday ...
  10. Never seen an anvil like this as pictured. Any idea what it was designed for? It weights a little over 300 pds.
  11. Hi all, I'm new to smithing and looking to get myself an anvil but with little experience in these matters I'm not sure if I should go for the older anvils off Ebay, like this one These seem to vary from 50kg to 150kg (110lbs-330lbs) but often the edges seem dull and its difficult to tell if it's a cast iron ASO. Or I could go with a new one, for a similar price 50kg (110lbs) which is as heavy I can get on my budget. I intend to use this to recreate historical weapons, starting small at 1st but eventually I would like to move on to swords etc. and I would like to try my hand at Damascus one day.
  12. Hi guys new here. Tonight I found three anvils for sale and a pair of tongs. One is 142lbs it has a laminated surface about 1/2 inch thick. Two is 197lbs. It says 200 on one side and has a 6 digit number on the other side. 1 inch handy and a Pritchard hole. Three is 285 lbs for markings there is only one. It is an oval on the side at the waist with the number 15103 stamped or ingraved into the oval. The oval is raised. Your thoughts on price. Brands. The guy wants 700.00 for all three and a pair of tongs. The pics arein order 3-2-1
