  1. Hey guys, So ive looked everywhere for something like this, but I cant seem to find anything. I decided I would just make one. I have a small forge, a ball peen hammer, an engineers hammer, a pair of vice grips, and a home made spike anvil, but thats about it. I was wondering if there was anything else is necessary, or highly recommended? What type of tongs, hardy tools, punches, etc. would a smith want to create knives axes and tools? Thanks, Ben
  2. Atlanta here, I am in the process of building my forge and i am ordering steel for the piping for it online; and that same website is the same place im getting my starter steel, Seeing how expensive this can be, I want to know if there are any local welding shops in the North Atlanta/Alpharetta area where i can purchase scrap metals and such, Zip code is 30022. Some one has got to be around me
  3. Hi, I know that there are tons of these on this site, but none of them really meet my needs. I live in Florida, not in the country at all, and i need an anvil. I can't afford an actual anvil, as I'm only 16 and on a tight budget, nor can i get rail road track, because like I already said i don't live near railroads or rural areas at all. I've heard about the forklift tine idea but I don't really know where i would find one in my area. sorry if there is already something extremely similar to this but the forum is massive and i couldn't find anyone in the same situation as myself. Thanks, B
  4. I've been searching and found an old table that the seller claims is an old Blacksmiths table. Is it just a table or is it a forge? I can see a few holes on the table making me think it is a forge, but I could be wrong. Link here: Cheers
  5. 2 months ago I found one of the first pieces I ever forged, and remembered how hard it was for me to find info on proper forging techniques, and it was then that I decided to make a series of video's that I hope will give newbie's the info needed to start forging. So here are the links. This video is about building your own coal forge and firepot In this video I show how to light a coal forge by just using 3 sheets of news paper I hope these video's are helpful and happy forging. Trip
  6. I've started a collection of hammers made by people I've shown how to forge hammers. Here are four that I have so far. Do any of you recognize who made these?
  7. This morning I received in my inbox, information of yet another degree in craft. This time at Crawford College of Art & Design, in Co. Cork, Ireland. It will consist of ceramics, glass and textiles. Once again blacksmiths are not at the table. I have long thought the blacksmith industry needs to focus some attention on getting our craft into the major art colleges. On the whole, when voicing this idea I’ve been met with mockery, derision, anger, outrage and, thankfully support, at such an idea. Why are we so resistant to new ideas? Surly having small forging departments open for three o
  8. I am looking to get started in blacksmithing (as a hobby), and I've been having a pretty difficult time tracking down a good, decently priced anvil. I'm thinking that something in the 70-100 lb. range would be perfect for me, as my projects would not be anything too demanding. Since I'm not using this on a professional level, I don't need a top-of-the-line anvil; but at the same time I would like something that can deliver at a reasonable price. Should I be looking for a used anvil, or a new one? Any recomended brands/types? I'm in Southern California (Los Angeles region), and so far I haven't
  9. Hello, I am buying for first anvil and a man wants to sell me a 135 lb peter wright for $500. It it completely refinished like brand new. Is this a good deal? Thanks,
  10. Hey yall, Well yesterday me and my good friend Dave Custer made a video about the history of blacksmithing and we both did a demonstration. Check out the video and let me know how you liked it TTYL, Trip
  11. I am writing a research paper on why the trade of blacksmithing almost died out in america in the middle of the 1960's and why it is haveing a strong reamergence now. I would appriciate any help with information on blacksmithingin the 1960's and if you are a blacksmith, if you could leave me information on when you started the trade,if it is a job or just a hobby, and short reason on what got you started or interested in blacksmithing. also if any one knows any blacksmiths makeing a liveing in the 1960' if you could ask them to chech this out i would appriciate it. Background on why i am d
