Hello all, I'm excited because I have just picked up my first 'real' anvil. It was quite cheap but has to be better than the improvised 'H' beam I have been using. It has a raised casting saying 'HEYFIELD 1CWT' and that's what it weighs. I live in Australia so maybe pretty obscure. It has an obvious casting line and doesn't appear to have a hard face-plate. It looks old "It was my grandfather's" said the vendor. It rings beautifully but has only about 50% rebound. However, right in the working area there are a few hammer marks, semi-circular divots about 1/2 to 1 mm deep. Otherwise the face is flat and quite true. What advice? Live with it as is or attempt to fix. If you think I should 'fix' the face, how? I'm tempted to hammer the hell out of it and see if I can re-form the metal. I am very new to this so I would appreciate any wisdom. I'll post pictures soon. Cheers, Simon

Hey all, I've recently come across a large batch or 1.5" Malleable Iron lock-rings (nuts, threaded washers, depends who u are). I'm wondering if anyone out there has ever worked with malleable iron before? I know the rough details of it, it's a white cast iron, no good, etc,etc..... but I have been able to hot-cut, bend, twist, and shape one of these as a test. I found that at anything above a dull red or maybe up to an orange shade, it seems somewhat useable, above that it can crumble under the hammer. Any thoughts or experience with this? I have 675+ of these... So I'm hoping to make them useful in the shop beyond their original use, which I don't need them for. Thanks to anyone that can help!

My grandfather bought this secondhand about 35 years ago, my Nana is now selling most of her things to move into a smaller house, this has been living in the garden as a patio ornament all that time. There doesn't seem to be any maker's mark, though it's exposure to the elements has left the surface pretty rough (it's obviously iron) I'm not sure how heavy it is but I regularly carry a 17kg dog and this thing I barely managed to get a cm off the ground for one second. All my Nana is interested in is what we should advertise it as (anvil or ASO) and how much we can get for it but I'd just like to know a bit more about it if anyone can help, a friend of mind believes it is probably cast but as I said, the weather has removed any seam lines that may have been present. Also I hit it with a hammer and it dings, on the middle, the horn and the back

I just recently picked this rare CES, California Electric Steel anvil in near pristine condition. It was manufactured in Angles Camp California which happens to be only a couple hours north of me. The gentleman I bought this from purchased it new from CES before 2000. Anvils in America lists this anvil on page 512. They only show that they made one size of anvil called the Model 200. Specs are as follows: Weight: 188 pounds. Material: 4135 Steel. Heat Treated to Rockwell 42-45c. They sold new back in 1997 for $551.25. As far as I can tell the foundry is still in operation but not making anvils anymore. I need to fix the stand it came with or make a new stand for it before I put it back in use.

Hi Folks We have just aquired a cast iron cauldron and have no idea of it's original use or age. All thoughts most welcome. Mobile phone in 1 pic to show size. Note grooves each side leading to holes through pivots. Multiple holes around rim suggest it may have had some sort of lid? Thanks Brian Buzzacott name on side would suggest Australian make.

Hello everyone, I'm new to this site, but everyone here seems to give rather in depth answers to other peoples questions, so I figured I would ask one of my own. I just changed the rotors on my vehicle, they seem to be a cast iron of sorts. I was wondering if it is possible to turn them into a knife, or blade of some kind. If I need to build a hot fire and hammer away for days on end, I'm willing to. But I would like any and all pointers. If possible will you try to keep your answers in laymans terms? I am not quite as fluent in the metallurgy lingo as I should be. Thank you for any and all help!

Hi! I started my smithing/smelting adventure not long ago. I've built a furnace, melt some alluminium, poured it into my clay cast, let it cool down (and used water to make the process faster). Then I wanted to make a sword out of it (as it was just a base stick cast). I heated it up, hit it with a hammer and... it just cracked. Later I discovered that I can even tear my casted metal pieces apart with my bare hands... Please tell me guys, what am I doing wrong? -
Hi guys just wanted to post some pics of a a couple glass anvils I recently cast. Would love to get some feed back on what you guys think of them. =) P.S. These guys make cool paperweights. P.P.S. If this is posted in the wrong section then please have a mod move it.
