What are the best kinds of wood for spear and axe shafts/handles?

Hello all. I plan on Blacksmithing as a full time job but I am currently a begginer. I am glad to be part of this community. I don't have any equipment yet so I would appreciate any input on the stuff I should buy. I want to make tools, and eventualy swords. I like the idea of being able to make everything for myself instead of buying a product from a store that has no quality guarantee. Should I buy leather gloves for protection and if so do I need welders gloves or will a pair from The Home Depot do just fine? Also, is working with brass anything like working with iron?

Hello everyone. I have been interested in blacksmithing for just a few months. I believe the Lord is calling me to be a full time blacksmith. I have only taken one blacksmith class yet and I have more to learn than I can imagine. Any suggestions on some good yet cheap begginer equipment I should get would be helpful (anvil, tongs, hammers). I have no idea which brands are good or not.
