  2. My new SBL had a broken pulley so i made a new one from 4" CRS on my other SBL. I did all the grooving from a 1/4" HSS bit ground to a point. All that is left is the keyway and set screw...Bob

  3. I have 4 metal lathes. 2 SB 10 inchers. A light 10K and a heavy 10L. The 10L i just bought and don't have set up yet. My 10K has been my use daily lathe for the last 3 years. There are lots of projects i have made here southbend10k : SouthBendLathe10k and lathe projects. I have made almost all the tooling i use and it works fine and was cheap to make. I also made an ER40 collet chuck for my 10K as well as a giant cast iron face plate. I also made a cross slide hole driller that can drill set screw holes without removing the part from the lathe and it works great.
I also have 2 Craftsman 6x12's that i don't use except for real small stuff. Here are a few pics. First one is the 10L i bought off ebay. 2nd and 3rd pic is my 10K which is also an ebay lathe.
If anyone ever needs anything made give me a yell. If you are around NE Ohio/ western PA and want to learn how to run a lathe give me a yell also, my shop is always open to anyone...Bob

  5. Do you use the little felt wipers on your wire? So do some don't, i do and they get dirty. I run salvage dirty S-6 wire on my welder, 300# in the last 6 years and i am still on the orig liner. I get a good deal on tips from ebay seller jeff nolan welders4less and when i run good wire i get it from him also and get the tips shipped along with the wire for free...Bob

  6. You have some good ideas so far and here is another. I built trailers 500 in all to sell. I never put used axles on them always buying or building new ones. There is alot of difference in trailer axles and mobile home axles, being the axle tube thickness, magnets, shoes, and backing plates for the drums everything else is about the same. Anyway when you make up the axle assembely weld the hangers to some 1/2"x3" flatbar the length of both axle sets plus a few inches on either end. That way you can bolt the sub assembely to the springs, put on the tires and roll the whole works under the frame. Then you can move the frame around to get a feel for tongue weight and such, then just stich the 1/2"x3 to your tube frame, it will also make your frame stronger where the hanger would have welded on to the tube. We put our tandems 1' back from center, so the center of the rocker bolt would be 1' back from the trailer center. Just my .02....Bob Metal Master Fab

  7. Most burners bricks just sit in place. I built coal stoves for 10 years when the fad was high in the 70's - 80's. You can cement them together with high heat cement like for a blast furnace but the average homeowner wouldn't have access to it from an average hardware store...Bob

  8. I am not a blacksmith per say, but i do have more than 30 years of iron work of some kind. I was a Journeyman Sheet Metal Worker, a Millwright, Machinist, Trailer and Woodburner builder, and now big oil. Couldn't pass the money to work in a refinery. I own my own company, Metal Master Fab, doing small jobs no one else wants to mess with. I also build ceiling O Scale train layouts from steel some with 1,000+ parts Tracks OverHesds I also run a South Bend Lathe group on yahoo southbend10k : SouthBendLathe10k and lathe projects. where i post 100's of pics for guys to learn on with usefull projects.
