  1. Threading would be a plus. My machines aren't fancy either just pratical. I can make about anything that comes thru the door. I wouldn't know how to run a real nice one...Bob

  2. I would be a good second operation lathe where a part is started in one machine and tranfered to another to finish other than that it wouldn't do me any good either. I am sure there are collectors out ther that would pay a good buck for it. Then have him get something nice...Bob

  3. hey bob - I would class that more as machine shop work !
The orientation of the vice is usually set so the work cannot be pushed through the jaws (ie the cutting load should be into the jaw).

Hi John, Yes the metal should push against the jaw when cutting to save it from sliding out. And yes it is more machine shop work that is alot of what i do when i am not welding or bending metal. In the winter i work out of my basement that is where all my machines are because it warm down there with my boiler heat where my shop is cold right now because i have the heat off, my gas bill is high enough. You just need more practice making big pcs into small pcs. I had a shaper that would cut 1" deep on a pass but you would have to slow the feed way down. I know my little guy won't do that but it will do what i need done...Bob
  4. The vise is loose from when i carried it in.
I have about 100 small gears to cut.
I have tooling to cut internal keyways.
I had a 32" shaper but it was just way too big . I will find lots of things to make to go with my lathe's. I will post some more pics as i go...Bob

  5. I had a preference years ago for rods but after working 30 years in different shops for the cheapest xxxxxxxx on earth you learn to run what they buy. So anymore i can run them all. Now its my turn to buy the rods for my shop. Ebay is my number 1 shopping place. The same with mig wire. Anything that is .030 S-7 i buy, i don't care where its made i can use it in my machine...Bob

  6. I made a stand for my SB 10K light 10" from 2" black pipe and some angle iron. Where the lathe footprint sits i added some 1/2" plate in that area to drill the legs into. I also made a sheetmetal chip pan.

I also just made a stand for my SB10L heavy 10" using 4" sq tube for the legs and the top/chip pan is formed channel from 3/8" plate 20" wide to give it strength. The channel is turned upside down with the ears down. I don't have a pic yet of that one as its still in my shop...Bob

  7. If you're interested in machining metal, do you know this site?

    Practical Machinist

When you get there go to the South Bend Lathe group. Good guys there. Check out ebay, loys of great deals there. I just bought a SB heavy 10 for under 400 bucks and sold 400 bucks of extra stuff that was in the junk drawer so i basically got it for free. But you may have to drive a little. Lots of used lathes in Phila Pa on ebay. Do a search for south bend lathe there...Bob
  8. I welded alot of stainless steel parts to carbon steel when i worked in the fab shop. Most of the time it was welded with ER309L stick rod if it was heavy plate to SS and sometimes it was just welded with the mig with steel wire.

Here is a good all around rod for lots of different metals Royal 220M.
