  1. One thing i would add is 5/16" holes drilled 360 degrees around the 8" plate to use as a stop when bending. Other than that its cool...Bob
  2. Preparation H is what i have used for 30 years for burns. I always have some in the tool box...Bob

  5. My buddy just bought the "floor version" of the HF bender for 49 bucks in the store mine is the bench job. Home made ones are nice because you can build what you need but i can't build one for 49 bucks...Bob
  6. That is nice and pretty. Too bad they don't stay that way. You can add your SB lathe serial number to a growing list of lathe owners if you want to email Steve Wells at his SB site. wswells@earthlink.net ...Bob
  7. You could always beat it over a log as my boss used to say. LOL. I use a 49 dollar HF bender, best tool for the money. I doubt if you could buy the steel and reproduce it that cheap...Bob Bender Similar to the Hossfeld #2
  8. They must have a cult following also, look at the lathe at the top of this machining forum...Bob Practical Machinist - The Manufacturing Forum - Powered by vBulletin
  9. Threading would be a plus. My machines aren't fancy either just pratical. I can make about anything that comes thru the door. I wouldn't know how to run a real nice one...Bob
  10. I would be a good second operation lathe where a part is started in one machine and tranfered to another to finish other than that it wouldn't do me any good either. I am sure there are collectors out ther that would pay a good buck for it. Then have him get something nice...Bob
  11. This one, 3rd lathe down...Bob Page Title
  12. Maybe you can email some pics to Tony and he can add them to his site too. Machine ToolREFERENCE ARCHIVE ...Bob
  13. Like this one? Page Title There is lots of info there and you can hunt around at the site and maybe find some more info...Bob
  14. Hi John, Yes the metal should push against the jaw when cutting to save it from sliding out. And yes it is more machine shop work that is alot of what i do when i am not welding or bending metal. In the winter i work out of my basement that is where all my machines are because it warm down there with my boiler heat where my shop is cold right now because i have the heat off, my gas bill is high enough. You just need more practice making big pcs into small pcs. I had a shaper that would cut 1" deep on a pass but you would have to slow the feed way down. I know my little guy won't do that but it will do what i need done...Bob
  15. The vise is loose from when i carried it in. I have about 100 small gears to cut. I have tooling to cut internal keyways. I had a 32" shaper but it was just way too big . I will find lots of things to make to go with my lathe's. I will post some more pics as i go...Bob
  16. Dirty as it was just found sitting in a body shop unused for years. Needs a good clean up but its all there. And i need to build a stand...Bob
  17. Here is a drawing of the motor/lathe spacing...Bob
  18. Here are 5 more pics. All of my pics can be found here for all of my projects. southbend10k : SouthBendLathe10k and lathe projects. and southbend10kpics : southbend 10k pics Remember you will need to get to the leg bolts and motor plate bolts so make it as easy as possible. And there is a 2x3 steel tube running between the angles of the legs directly under the lathe...Bob
  19. I have some more pics if you need them...Bob
  20. 1987 Jackson big window, nothing special except the purple W i added in 1992...Bob W
  21. I had a preference years ago for rods but after working 30 years in different shops for the cheapest xxxxxxxx on earth you learn to run what they buy. So anymore i can run them all. Now its my turn to buy the rods for my shop. Ebay is my number 1 shopping place. The same with mig wire. Anything that is .030 S-7 i buy, i don't care where its made i can use it in my machine...Bob
  22. I made a stand for my SB 10K light 10" from 2" black pipe and some angle iron. Where the lathe footprint sits i added some 1/2" plate in that area to drill the legs into. I also made a sheetmetal chip pan. I also just made a stand for my SB10L heavy 10" using 4" sq tube for the legs and the top/chip pan is formed channel from 3/8" plate 20" wide to give it strength. The channel is turned upside down with the ears down. I don't have a pic yet of that one as its still in my shop...Bob Pic 1 2" pipe stand. SB10K Pic 2 Rack and swing out tool holder. Pic 3 Chip pan, and the belt dosen't rub when its tight.
  23. When you get there go to the South Bend Lathe group. Good guys there. Check out ebay, loys of great deals there. I just bought a SB heavy 10 for under 400 bucks and sold 400 bucks of extra stuff that was in the junk drawer so i basically got it for free. But you may have to drive a little. Lots of used lathes in Phila Pa on ebay. Do a search for south bend lathe there...Bob
  24. I welded alot of stainless steel parts to carbon steel when i worked in the fab shop. Most of the time it was welded with ER309L stick rod if it was heavy plate to SS and sometimes it was just welded with the mig with steel wire. Here is a good all around rod for lots of different metals Royal 220M. CROWN
  25. I use to build up brass wear plates for the steelmill with a mig and brass wire and argon gas. But a torch and some brazing rod work just fine...Bob
