  1. I did a search for how many cans it takes to make a ton, and came across this article. https://archive.nytimes.com/green.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/06/12/toward-a-greener-soda-can/ It may help you to decide whether or not you want to proceed in your endeavor.
  2. I'm not understanding you John. In my case there is only one choice. Get to the exit for the extinguisher. If the fire is going to be containable, get to it. Otherwise, you can get out. Of course, this is for my setup, and I am only having the one extinguisher. More could be better.
  3. I installed a carbon monoxide/smoke detector not far from my forge before I light it up for use. Also, a fire extinguisher in between the two roll up doors of the garage. It is better to not have to charge into or through a fire to get to your extinguisher.
  4. Best wishes to Frosty for an expedient recovery.
  5. Made another 'S' hook, hand painted, finished. I haven't a table of a suitable height for which to attach my post vise, and, in the interest of portability, decided to forge a bracket which allows me to mount the vise on my hand truck/dolly. I don't intend to do any banging on stuff with this setup, I don't want to damage the hand truck's platform.
  6. I have some doubts that it is Satanite. My forge does not look that color and yours also looks to have maybe some larger clumps in it. Not consistent with my limited experience with using Satanite.
  7. I looked at the Vevor site for that forge. I could find no reference to what the supplied refractory actually is. How did you learn that it is Satanite? Yes, that was a mistake and yes, do that with any castable refractory, and any additional ITC100, plistix, IR reradiating, protective top layer.
  8. Maybe you did not "butter" the ceramic blanket before applying the refractory? Then it may have delaminated to leave it hanging in a 3000 degree breeze? "Buttering" is spritzing the blanket with water so that the face of it is not so dry that it sucks much of the moisture out of the refractory, causing problems. On the third burner, when you had it off, did you leave the choke fully open or closed? I learned with my Mr. Volcano to just remove the burner immediately upon shutting the burner off. Yes, I melted the gas line off. I had it partly closed off with the choke open. I was cleaning up and soon found the gas line on the floor, melted off from the fitting at the burner. The instructions tell you that the forge should not be closed off and the choke should be closed. Nevertheless, I just remove it immediately, as it is held tight with a thumbscrew, which makes for easy, quick removal.
  9. No, none of the above. But I do appreciate that picture for some guidance.
  10. Yes, you remember correctly. I got a leg vise from an auction last year. I need to make a spring for it and establish where and how to secure it safely. I have a large bench vise attached to a 4' x 8' welding table that weighs about 1000 pounds, so it is pretty secure.
  11. Thanks Frosty. If I had taken a picture of those tongs rotated 90 degrees, you would have seen what I meant by wonky, but I'll get it. They just have the wrong twist. I realized that I don't have to do everything with the hammer, the vise can be your friend.
  12. Thank you Anvil. I used a pipe held in the bench vise as a mandrel.
  13. Yesterday was my birthday. Lori gifted me some RR spikes and a bending fork.
  14. I finished forging my first S hooks. And also mostly finished scrolling tongs, the handles are still a little wonky. The tongs were from precut blanks, to be honest about it.
  15. Rojo, quite nice. Do the stems pivot in an out to hold fast the glass?
  16. I looked at a St. Louis area Tractor supply site which lists propane at $3.59 per gallon for a refill.
  17. What you are asking is not so much blacksmithing, but more akin to an Ironworker, Sheet metal worker or steel fabricator. All terms readily produce descriptions I think you will find to be most similar to what you are asking.
  18. Just as soon as I read "big glass jar" I had a feeling that things were not going to go well. Live and learn. Sometimes we can be fortunate enough to learn from the mistakes of others that to have to make them ourselves.
  19. Yes, but did it specify by weight or by volume?
  20. I am still experimenting with the plistix and YSZ, no confirmed "amazing" results yet, unfortunately.
  21. Great job TW. That poor little fella. I hope he has a much better life with you looking out. The younger they are, the more quickly they can recover from being fixed. I think that two pounds is the minimum weight at which they will neuter him.
  22. The Mr. Volcano comes with the rigidizer.
