  1. My table is 38" wide by 6ft long. The top is made of 3x1-1/2 rectangular tube spaced 1-1/4" apart so I can use clamps anywhere on the table. It uses 5" C channel on the sides. Each of the rectangular tubes are welded to the C channel with 4 short welds so that if one of the tubes gets damaged I can replace it easily. The legs are also C channel just because I had some left over. On each leg is a trailer tongue jack that I can use to level the table and also roll it around. That way even on a floor that isn't level I can dial the table in if I need it level and I don't have any problems with the table rocking. Welded horizontally underneath the table to the C Channel is 1-1/4 16 gauge square tube that I slide some 1" square tube in that had 1 more rectangular tube welded to the end at table height so it acts like a table extension that can be slid out when needed. I made the 1" slide out tube sit down low enough so that when I slide it out and put my chop saw on the square tube, the saw table top is even with the top of the welding table. This makes it super easy to cut/slide material around and the extensions give support and length on both side of the table. Also on the end of the table I have welded 3 very heavy pipes from one side of the C channel to the other in kind of an upside down triangle spaced about 3/4" apart. I use this to bend flat and round bars. So the C channel actually sticks out past the rectangular tube on 1 side far enough for the triple pipe. I do a lot of sculpting so my bends are whatever I feel like making them that day.
  2. True. I was thinking about the acid not the zinc. I'm not sure how to dispose of zinc properly. Of course zinc is in the ground and even ocean water naturally. It's even in vitamin supplements so it must not be too dangerous. Still, I don't know what form the zinc removed from steel is in compared to these.
  3. As old as this topic is I want to tell you a couple of things about muratic acid. First, muratic acid is the acid used in swimming pools to adjust the pH. Another place it's used in in Murine eye drops. However in both the pool and in Murine the acid is VERY diluted. Just looking into a bottle of swimming pool muratic acid can get some fumes in your eye and damage it. Always use goggles. Anyway disposal isn't really damaging if it's diluted enough, just like if you were to drain a swimming pool.
  4. Although this thread is pretty old I thought I would tell Laertius why he could drill ok with 1/8 bit but the 1/4 inch one just skated. Let's assume with the 1/8 bit your drill was turning at 500 rpm. The outer edge of the bit would be moving at 196 inches per minute (500*3.14*1/8). At the same rpm the outer edge of the 1/4 bit would be turning 392 inches per minute. So, to get the same cut you would need to slow the rpm down to 250 for the larger bit. If you understand the principle it's easy to adjust the cut speeds. If you have trouble just think of the drill bits like wheels on a bike. The bigger the wheel the slower it needs to rotate to cover the same ground as a smaller wheel in the same amount of time.
