Recently I made a hammer eye punch from 1” round 4140 and I finally got to test it out today and it works much better than the 5/8” round punch I used to use. Goes through steel much faster and it’s easier for me to get a good hole. The hammer I’m working on is mild steel that I will forge weld carbon steel faces onto. I’m doing it this way because I ran out of hammer sized steel that wasn’t mild. It will be a cross peen

I had never even heard of this brand! I’d be curious to learn more too

The fire pot on this would be built up similar to how you clay a traditional rivet forge

I’m a few years late to the party but these look great and i might have to Barrow the design. I’m not great with making tongs but i only have a few and i have a ton of rivets i made when i made a rivet header. Nice job JHCC

Yesterday I forged some punches and a hammer eye drift. One punch is a handled hammer eye drift and the other is a 1/4” I believe round punch. From a coil spring. The hammer tools are from a 1” axel

I personally enjoy forging hammers from scratch so I have a few scrapped hammers I’ve messed up on but I’ve gotten fairly good at getting straight eyes. I recently forged a handles hammer eye punch and a hammer drift for better eyes because my old one was square and I was using a Warren 5/8” blacksmith handled punch I put a rough diamond point on. Way too big of a hole. It took forever to punch. There’s also a round punch I made in the picture. Reforging a hammer is a great way to go though. -

I didnt get to meet him as he lives across the country but i think its still important to support our fellow smiths because one day they might return the favor -

I forge primarily with a 2 lb straight peen i forged but before that i used several cheap harbor freight hammers and. A one dollar ball peen from a garage sale. That ball peen is small. But one of my favorite hammers. I also have a 2 oz ball peen i bought with a 2 lb ball peen for like 3$. They both work well but the small one is better for texturing than forging. I ordered a 100$ rounding hammer that is 2.5lbs because I couldn’t forge one myself at the time and i wanted to support a fellow smith. This isn’t necessary though. Cheap hammers wok the same. -
Alright thanks Thomas. I think I’ll m are a mailbox shaped own like Frosty suggested because it should suit most of my needs and i can always use the coal forge if i need to make something that wont fit in the gas forge.

I’ll look for some tomorrow!

thank you! I think I’ll do that and try some different configurations with ifb

Thanks frosty! sorry for lack of detail. I’ll give some more now. im looking to do decorative more than knives but an occasional knife. Hammers are something I’d like to do more often Im using a ribbon burner. Square might be better just trying to get all the info I need

I apologize if this has been posted before. Please redirect me If so. Should a forge be a box or a cylinder shape and what is more efficient? or does it not make much difference.

Yep I’ve decided on one similar to yours based on Wayne Coe‘s thanks

There aren’t any scrap yards I can pick through or I’d have a ton of junk metal I’ll never use ha but i want spikes not for knives but for things like bottle openers I’ve seen some garden tools and cooking tools that could be fun to make. And tongs from spikes. I know I could make tongs from other things like plain round or square bar but I like idea of using something strange like a spike for the metal. I dunno probably bad idea. But why not -
I know they can get just as hot I just wanna make sure the one I build is able to weld in

I live in west Fargo North Dakota and nearby I think Fargo North Dakota Or Moorhead Minnesota. I think Moorhead is the place b it anyhow there is a spot along the railroad with a pile of used railroad spikes from when they replace the spikes. There’s thousands of them like enough to fill a pickup truck up. The pile is a few feet around and 2-3 feet tall. I like forging rail spikes so I was wondering if there was a way to get ahold of the company that owns the tracks to ask for some/ trade for some. They just sit and collect rust so I imagine they wouldn’t be too tight on holding them. Problem is I don’t know who owns them and who owns the tracks. And there’s never anyone onsite when I go by. Thanks
