  1. I've never had it happen to me, but I saw on Biker Build Off in the Discovery Channel, One of the Builders was using a Chop Saw and the Blade came apert on film. They even showed it again in slow motion. The pieces just missed the guys belly! Always use the guards built on the machines. Quit your complaining and learn to work around the Guards!
  2. Nice Shop. I have to agree with Swamp and Thomas! Good ventalation is very important. Mount your fire extingusher just inside your primary exit. If you can't put ot the fire, then leave!
  3. Wecome aboard Nine! Hey, we got a guy out here we call Nine as well. We call him that cause he got one finger nipped off from a Little Giant! Now you understand why we call him Nine!
  4. Welcome aboard Rush! Man that sounds Right!
  5. Welcome aboard Rain. Wow, 14 and already starting a lifetime of learning. Keep your head up and Hammer Down!
  6. I was in Moline IL today and saw a $2.13 sign. OUr gas here in my town is still $2.31!
  7. There is another approach to the subject. I've not mastered it yet but it works pretty good. I watched Tom Clark, with his Hofi Style hammer, draw out a nail on a 1/2" round stock, about five inches long, down to a four sided pointed nail. He uses the downside edge of the face of his hammer as it was rotated in his hand, so it could be used as a fuller and works over the heart of the anvil and before all the heat was gone, he hardie cut the nail almost all the way through so he still had a handle to work with. Very quick and solid way of hammer control. On his second heat, he broke off the nail in a Nail Header and hammered the sweetest round head I had ever seen. Two heats and a five inch Big headed nail was done. Using the edge of the hammer face as a fuller really move some material. I was amazed to watch it happen! It should also be noted: the edge of his hammer was really rounded over smooth fuller style as well!
  8. Those are really cool! The big Diesel was huge, the V-8 was amazing, but I'm a little partial to the Deere 2 Cylinder. I did send a copy of the lik to a few tractor buddies of mine. Thanks for shairing!:D
  9. OK boys and girls! Lets play nice! We are all in the blacksmithing world and this world is big and bad enough to house all types! Can we all at least on one subject give it a collective Xxxx Yes! That Subject would be that we all have found a mystical or magical relationship with hot metal. Because something happened in you mind when you first saw hot metal move under the influence of your hammer! Can I get a Xxxx YES!
  10. I stand corrected and you must forgive me for my ignorance. I was unaware that posting oppinions in this fourm on events covered by our national news networks would be such a problem. In keeping with the site administrators guidlines, I was not directing my freedom of speach comments to anyone in particular. My question was, was it over the top. Judging by some of the responses in this OPEN fourm, the answers seems to yes and not quite far enough. I sure am glad I live in a country were open debate and differing opinions are allowed, even recomended! Because a lot of soldiers have died to ensure that we can. Seems we have lost something here; What ever happened to Government of the people, by the people and for the people? Just an old soldier, saying what's on him mind! If you think I support that movie, then let me set you straight, I don't!
  11. Freedom of Speech. These folks have every right to make this film. I also have freedom of Feet , Ears and Wallet! In other wordsthey can say or spew anything they want, I can leave using my Feet, Freedom of speech doen't gaurentee freedom of ears, and If I don't want to pay to see it, I don't have to.
  12. OK I understand differences of opinions, Freedom Of Speach, Can't we all just get along...... but this has me puzzled. There is a movie coming to the US called Death to a President, is this over the top or exceptable now? Watch the video of George Bush being assassinated | the Daily Mail showing GWB being shot at a Chicago event. Back in the Day, in the Military we have protection of the President Protocals and Procedures. Any talk, discussion of harm to the President would be reported to Secret Service. This kind of stuff bothers me, any president, either party. This seems wrong! Am I alone?
  13. I don't know what the heck they're called but here is another one. Lets' see somebody repousse this one!
  14. This photo was taken in Feb of 2002, just five months after 9-11. THis cross was found in the rubble and was erected at Ground Zero. Just thought I'd shair it with the fourm. I had a lot of photos from GZ, but this one is my favorite! Just honorably remembering the events of five years ago, on this September 11, 2006
  15. I came across this picture and had a very strange effect when you scan your foucus slowly around to different places in the field. Do you see movement or not? Am I alone in this effect? I'm looking for a reason why this happens; any guesses??? Just scan the immage like you are viewing the suttle curve of the small of a Ladies back. Don't focus on any one spot, keep your focal point moving around the image. Can you see the effect? I hope I'm not alone!
  16. If you don't think our military pilots earn their pay ... you need to take a look at this picture .. and then look again and realize what you're seeing .. This photo was taken by a soldier in Afghanistan of a helo rescue mission. The pilot is a PA Guard guy who flies EMS choppers in civilian life. Now how many people on the planet you reckon could set the back end of a chopper down on the roof top of a shack on a steep mountain cliff and hold it there while soldiers load wounded men in the rear??? If this does not impress you ... nothing ever will. Gives me the chills and a serious case of the vertigo ... I can't even imagine having the nerve ... much less the talent and ability ... God Bless our military!!!!! Rick Happy Hammering! Jet Noise the Sound of Freedom! When you give up freedom for security, you'll have niether! Proud to be an American Blacksmith! USAF TSgt. Retired
  17. God keeps all soldiers in special places. Some of those places are by His side and some are in Fox Holes. There are no Athiest in Fox Holes! Tell him to keep his Head Down, his Powder Dry and to take care of his feet! Our prayers are with him and his Brothers and Sisters in Harms Way. May they all be safe and achieve Victory!
  18. Promotive: Welcome to the fourm! Do you know you live in the same area/town as one of the Best Master Blacksmiths on the planet? His name is George Dixon. Geroge was the last Master Smith at Samuel Yellin Ironworks when it closed. He's in your neck of the woods. If I were you, I'd find him and see if the shop floors needed sweeping, get you foot in that door and just watch that guy work. Also you ain't that far from John C. Campbell Folk School if you wanted to take some classes.
  19. Blacksmithtech: The key to working the coil to the right length is when you first bend and then coil around the anvilsteak is to be looking at the ends of the piece and making small adjustments so they do line up while everybody else including yourself is looking at the coil on the steak! It's either that or just pure dumb luck!
  20. Come on....you know you want too! Don't make us beg. Just a couple of photos at first. Moble shop setup photos would be nice!
  21. I'm the big guy that made the safety pin. Were you a guest or a demonstrator at our hammer in?
